Growing own food

I might grow some mushrooms. I have some oak I cut last fall, and I think that's best for shitakki mushrooms. I have looked at doing that for a few years now.

Designing and building a backyard deck/greenhouse currently. Also have a mini-mushroom farm in the basement. Would love to discuss this with other people. Are there any forums or irc channels for this? Also interested in wild edible plants, at-home energy production, and self reliance.

Gardens can be a lot of work. Weeding is constant. I have some medicinal plants in my yard, not much really edible.

It is a lot of work, But well worth it. made a lot of salsa last year.

We did too. I am still eating it. We have peppers seeds started now for springtime.

We've been doing family gardens our whole lives. Weeding is a chore, which is one of the benefits of our planned greenhouse. I've read about square foot gardening and raised beds recently.

I've checked out permies.com for many great resources and ideas. Are there any other sites dedicated to backyard farming and low area/high yield harvests?

I often think gardening burns more calories than what is produced...gotta have animals for meat.

knowing what goes into your manure is crucial too..

good size garden, volunteer vegetarians that work it for the summer in exchange for a bed and limited internet access. Then spend the winter eating meat and potatoes. Thats my plan

Not potatoes. They're easy and calorie dense.

Ok so got the base going .. should let it cook for a few hours ... adding onions and garlic .. chop 3 cloves to different consistencies for layers of flavor...mmmmmm

That's a nice tidy spice cupboard, mine's a real mess, but I do use them every meal.

I am going to get into Micro sprouting, just started some bean shoots,lentils and pulses
