Very interested in how methane is connected to this. Thanks. Hi, Go to one of my links with the Earth Chem and you can click on a specific part of the map and it will give you the current reading or you can toggle back to the 25th or 26th when the cloud was very large. Thanks, this is very very bad. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 22373790 I went as far back as feb 17 [link to worldview.earthdata.nasa.gov (secure)] and it looks like it probably did originate in central Africa and just made it to the west coast yesterday. The the natural background if CO in the atmosphere is about 150 parts per billion, so there must be a floor in that map where it is not shown. The red on that map could be 300 parts per billion. EDIT: I just noticed the part that shows the actual concentration, I didn't see it in the video, anyways... On average, in your home, the concentration is about 5000 parts per billion... this comes from a variety of sources such as heating equipment or ovens. The red on the map is most likely and atmospheric condition that is preventing emissions from cars and factories from dispersing further into the atmosphere as they normally would. Healthy humans can tolerate up to 35,000 parts per billion without ill effect. |

I have a really bad feeling about this.. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 71505554 I'm in Phoenix now, but I've had a headache for the last few days. I NEVER get headaches. And I've only been able to sleep for 1 1/2 to 2 hours at a time. I've been getting out of bed around 4am with intense anxiety too. Weird, because I always sleep well all night and get out of bed around 5:30. I love sunrises. I just came back here form Eureka. My ex, who I still am good friends with and care a lot about, is in Redding, by Mt. Shasta. Hope she'll be ok. I should call her and see how she's been feeling. She's a nurse there. |

The levels of carbon monoxide that are showing on the west coast right are far higher than the data that NASA is showing on the link you supplied (140 ppm vs. 2000+ Ppm in some spots) I would think that if a cloud of carbon monoxide traveled from Africa to the west coast of the U.S, there would be significant thinning of said cloud, but it appears that there is an increase in the parts per million from NASA monitors. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 70617131 You are an idiot. CO is combustible. Come back when you have some sense. . CO will oxidize but will not burn(combust). It's about gaining/losing electrons not about (fire) "burning" as most on here think of as 'combustion'. No, CO will and does ignite. . |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 49917655 United States 02/28/2016 08:39 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Carbon monoxide poisoning occurs after too much inhalation of carbon monoxide (CO). Carbon monoxide is a toxic (poisonous) gas, but, being colorless, odorless, tasteless, and initially non-irritating, it is very difficult for people to detect. Carbon monoxide is a product of incomplete combustion of organic matter due to insufficient oxygen supply to enable complete oxidation to carbon dioxide (CO2). It is often produced in domestic or industrial settings by motor vehicles that run on gasoline, diesel, methane, or other carbon-based fuels and from tools, gas heaters, and cooking equipment that are powered by carbon-based fuels such as propane, butane and charcoal. Exposure at 100 ppm or greater can be dangerous to human health.[1] Symptoms of mild acute poisoning include lightheadedness, confusion, headache, vertigo, and flu-like effects; larger exposures can lead to significant toxicity of the central nervous system and heart, and death. After acute poisoning, long-term sequelae often occur. Carbon monoxide can also have severe effects on the fetus of a pregnant woman. Chronic exposure to low levels of carbon monoxide can lead to depression, confusion, and memory loss. Carbon monoxide mainly causes adverse effects in humans by combining with hemoglobin to form carboxyhemoglobin (HbCO) in the blood. This prevents hemoglobin from carrying oxygen to the tissues, effectively reducing the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood, leading to hypoxia. Additionally, myoglobin and mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase are thought to be adversely affected. Carboxyhemoglobin can revert to hemoglobin, but the recovery takes time because the HbCO complex is fairly stable. Treatment of poisoning largely consists of administering 100% oxygen or providing hyperbaric oxygen therapy, although the optimum treatment remains controversial.[2] Oxygen works as an antidote as it increases the removal of carbon monoxide from hemoglobin, in turn providing the body with normal levels of oxygen. The prevention of poisoning is a significant public health issue. Domestic carbon monoxide poisoning can be prevented by early detection with the use of household carbon monoxide detectors. Carbon monoxide poisoning is the most common type of fatal poisoning in many countries.[3] Historically, it was also commonly used as a method to commit suicide, usually by deliberately inhaling the exhaust fumes of a running car engine. Modern automobiles, even with electronically controlled combustion and catalytic converters, can still produce levels of carbon monoxide which will kill if enclosed within a garage or if the tailpipe is obstructed (for example, by snow) and exhaust gas cannot escape normally. Carbon monoxide poisoning has also been implicated as the cause of apparent haunted houses; symptoms such as delirium and hallucinations have led people suffering poisoning to think they have seen ghosts or to believe their house is haunted.[4] [link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)] Exposure greater than 100ppm or 10,000 ppb can be dangerous. |
