Adding a new twist to an already unpredictable campaign, Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz on Friday accused rival Donald Trump of planting a “smear” story about his alleged infidelity in the National Enquirer.
The tabloid Enquirer’s story, in the magazine’s April 4 issue, reported that “political operatives are compiling an explosive ‘dirt file’ on the finger-wagging, conservative senator from Texas,” accompanying it with images of women with their faces digitized.

“This National Enquirer story is garbage,” Cruz told reporters at a Friday afternoon press conference. “It is complete and utter lies. It is a tabloid smear...that has come from Donald Trump and his henchmen.”
