Any Cures for Insomnia?
I've already tried staying up late and posting on GLP, but it didn't help at all. Any suggestions?

Try melatonin. It regulates sleeping, and has helped me quite a bit.

Re: Any Cures for Insomnia?
if and when melatonin fails you can buy diphenhydramine, the over the counter drug for sleeping. if that fails you then have to go to a doctor and be prescribed temazepam , lunesta, or ambien.

in anycase all three lines, melatonin, diphenhydramine and RX sleepers are harmless and clean substances that cause no health concerns. the third line, RX sleepers may only be able to be used once every 2 or 3 nights to avoid any possibility of dependancy, though if you have to go to the third line of treatment, sleeping well a few times a week is better than sleeping well zero times per week.

What is melatoin?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 165205

Melatonin appears to have some use against circadian rhythm sleep disorders, such as jet lag and delayed sleep phase syndrome. It has been studied for the treatment of cancer, immune disorders, cardiovascular diseases, depression, seasonal affective disorder (SAD), and sexual dysfunction. A study by Alfred J. Lewy and other researchers at OHSU found that it may ameliorate SAD and circadian misalignment,[19] but as of 2006 it is known to affect the timing of endogenous melatonin production, raising the risk that it can exacerbate both clinical depression and SAD.[20] Basic research indicates that melatonin may play a significant role in modulating the effects of drugs of abuse such as cocaine.[21]

Melatonin receptors appear to be important in mechanisms of learning and memory,[22] and melatonin can alter electrophysiological processes associated with memory, such as long-term potentiation (LTP). Melatonin has been shown to prevent the hyperphosphorylation of the tau protein. Hyperphosphorylation of tau protein can result in the formation of neurofibrillary tangles, a pathological feature seen in Alzheimer's disease). Thus, melatonin may be effective for treating Alzheimer's Disease.[23] These same neurofibrillary tangles can be found in the hypothalamus in patients with Alzheimer's, adversely affecting their body's production of melatonin. Those Alzheimer's patients with this specific affliction often show heightened afternoon agitation, called "sundowning," which has been shown in many studies to be effectively treated with melatonin supplements in the evening.[24]

Rozerem (Ramelton) is an agonist with high affinity for both MT1 and MT2 melatonin receptors. This is a newly available prescription medication that can be helpful for insomnia.[citation needed]

Recent research has concluded that melatonin supplementation in perimenopausal women produces a highly significant improvement in thyroid function and gonadotropin levels, as well as restoring fertility and menstruation and preventing the depression associated with the menopause.[25]

Several clinical studies indicate that supplementation with melatonin is an effective preventative treatment for migraine sufferers.[26][27]

There may be other, far-reaching therapeutic uses for melatonin, such as in the treatment of various forms of cancer, HIV, and other viral diseases.[28]

Re: Any Cures for Insomnia?
three things:

When you lay down to sleep, force youself to breath deeply, in and out. It will tire you, and the oxygen will help your brain to relax.

If there is noise from outside keeping you awake, don't try and drown it out, listen to it, let it envelope you and embrace it, the drone will put you to sleep.

Watch TV while laying down, you will be asleep in no time.

Re: Any Cures for Insomnia?
If you enter insomnia into the GLP search engine you can find some other threads about it that have some pretty good advice. You can also go to a health food store and ask the clerk to point you to sleeping remedies or ask what they recommend. What I use now is an herbal called Calms Forte by Hyland (in Walgreens). Also took liquid magnesium for awhile. I have a lemon balm plant that I pick a few leaves off of to chew before bed. Also Celestial Seasonings 'Tension Tamer' or 'SleepyTime Extra', one of those. Usually before bed I take Melatonin, then the lemon balm leaves and 2 Calms Forte, and a Star Trek NG episode playing low on the DVD. When I wake during the night, and I usually do, I then put on a sleeping mask which helps me stay asleep after the sun is up, otherwise I wake up too early. Until I started doing all this it was getting pretty bad trying to fall asleep at night.

Re: Any Cures for Insomnia?
What ever I did last night.

I dunno what it was but most nights I am up until 2 to 4 AM if I do go to bed I just toss and turn.

Last night I went to bed at 10:30 lay there a very few mins then woke up approx 8 am this morning. VERY strange for me. For months I have not been getting much sleep then in the evening when I sit down I can't keep my eyes open but don't actually sleep as I can hear everything going on. But then I go to bed and wide awake.

Maybe the Keylime pie I have been eating as normally I don't eat that often yet I bought a frozen one last week and have started eating it and had a piece just before bed. What's in Keylime pie that makes you sleepy?

Sometimes I put a little, just a pinch, of nutmeg in some sugar water. Makes me sleep. I just make sure I have at least 8 or 9 hours to sleep. That is a narcotic though so am not recommending it.

Re: Any Cures for Insomnia?
Insomnia is but one symptom of liver congestion. Do all the major cleanses and you should be able to sleep again without pills. The major cleanses are, colon, parasite and liver,(there are others). These are the most important ones and should be done in that order. Kits are available at most health food stores. You can also google them and find all sorts of formulas that you can follow on your own if you find the kits a bit too pricey. Good luck.
