Unusual quake cluster worries Japan

"TOKYO -- Seismic activity in southern Japan is mystifying geologists and keeping the nation on edge.

The island of Kyushu has been struck by a series of significant earthquakes, with the epicenters moving progressively further inland. The cluster started with the deadly quakes that hit Kumamoto Prefecture last Thursday and Saturday. Temblors subsequently rocked the Mount Aso region and neighboring Oita Prefecture.

There is a known concentration of faults in the area. Still, experts say it is highly unusual to have a string of quakes measuring around magnitude 6 and stretching over such a vast area. The epicenter of the Oita jolt was about 100km away from the first Kumamoto quake.

"I don't quite understand what is happening with the recent earthquakes, because it's an unfamiliar phenomenon," said Yoshihisa Iio, a professor at Kyoto University's Research Center for Earthquake Prediction.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said it is unprecedented to have a group of large quakes in these three parts of Kyushu. Experts are divided over how far the shaking will spread and whether it could prompt more quakes centered elsewhere."...

The government committee met on Sunday and agreed that the Futagawa zone was the culprit in the main quake. This zone, it turns out, is longer than previously thought and stretches close to Mount Aso's caldera. The committee warned local residents to brace for more aftershocks...

Meanwhile, the GSI said the main Kumamoto quake unleashed 40% more seismic energy than the devastating 1995 earthquake. Saturday's quake "may have impacted nearby faults," said Hiroshi Yarai, director of the GSI's crustal deformation research division. Signs point to the quake nudging the Beppu-Haneyama fault zone in Oita, which lies northeast of the Futagawa zone.

The Beppu-Haneyama zone, in turn, is linked in the east to the Japan Median Tectonic Line -- a huge fault structure that extends through western Japan, including the island of Shikoku and the Kii Peninsula in Wakayama Prefecture. This raises the possibility that the Kumamoto earthquakes could cause a broader chain reaction across the Bungo Channel in the Shikoku region."

Brace yourselves people, this might become a BIG problem...

Seismic activity stretched 100 kilometers

"The magnitude-7.3 earthquake that pounded Kumamoto Prefecture early Saturday was more powerful than a foreshock that struck two days earlier.
The seismic activity then moved northeast to reach areas in Oita Prefecture about 100 kilometers away from the focus of the magnitude-7.3 quake. Experts are concerned that quake activities could spread to a major active fault that lies further ahead in that direction.

According to a calculation by Masashi Omata of the Japanese Society for Active Fault Studies, the ground here moved about 20 centimeters vertically, and about two meters horizontally. This measurement was taken in a northeastern section of the Futagawa fault zone, which extends for at least about 64 kilometers.

Experts: Mt. Aso link unlikely

"Experts rejected the possibility that active volcanoes in the Kyushu region have been affected by the recent earthquakes, though there was a small-scale eruption on Mt. Aso in Kumamoto Prefecture at about 8:30 a.m. on Saturday."

Contrary to the conclusions drawn in the OP, "experts" are saying not to worry, even though the evidence shows the quakes are centered on Aso. I smell another Fukushima-esque coverup. The Japanese have quite the habit of downplaying events.

Similarities to Hanshin quake observed

"This earthquake was caused by a fault slipping sideways as it was being pulled north-south," Gen Aoki, head of the Japan Meteorological Agency's earthquake and tsunami monitoring section, said at a press conference on Thursday night. Aoki indicated the quake had a "strike-slip" mechanism in which the fault running through the ground shifted horizontally.

This is the same type of quake as the magnitude-7.3 Great Hanshin Earthquake in 1995, in which more than 6,400 people died or remain missing. It is different from the magnitude-9.0 Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011, a massive trench-type quake that occurred where an ocean plate presses against a continental plate."

Chain reaction activated separate fault zone in 2nd huge quake

"TOKYO — Seismic experts believe a magnitude 7.3 quake that rocked southwestern Japan in the early hours of Saturday occurred on a separate fault zone from a massive temblor that struck barely a day earlier, and was triggered by a chain reaction involving a series of tremors.

The 1:25 a.m. earthquake, with the same intensity as the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake, was about 16 times as large as a magnitude 6.5 temblor that hit Kumamoto Prefecture Thursday night, the Japan Meteorological Agency said, describing the latest jolt as the main quake and the initial one as a foreshock.

The governmental Earthquake Research Committee concluded Friday that the magnitude 6.5 quake happened on the 81-kilometer-long Hinagu fault zone running along the central part of the island of Kyushu.

Shinji Toda, professor of earthquake geology at Tohoku University, said the 64-kilometer-long Futagawa fault zone located north of the Hinagu zone could have moved to cause the fresh quake."

It is saying the ground rose by 1 Meter right at the base of the Aso volcano. It shows on the map on the page it moved at the base. This could indicate a lot of rising magma. Just like in yellowstone we see the ground swelling

This story has a map showing the epicenters of all the quakes. Take a look - it's pretty terrifying. You can clearly see they're following the faultline.

Yeah that's posted above. With the kind of quake it was, dramatic shifts are common. The geography of Kyushu was permanently changed by this. Crazy stuff.

Seismologists urge caution as epicenters move southwest

"Residents in relatively calm parts of Kyushu should be on guard for strong earthquakes because the series of tremors hitting the southern island appears to be expanding southwest, seismologists said.

An analysis of the epicenters of the earthquakes that started on April 14 showed an initial movement northeast from central Kumamoto Prefecture to Oita Prefecture. Now, the seismologists say, an increase in seismic activity has been detected southwest.

“We have seen small earthquakes hitting sporadically (in the southwestern part of Kumamoto Prefecture),” an official with the Meteorological Agency said at a news conference on April 17. “It is hard to predict what will happen in the future, but we urge the public to remain alert.”

The official said the number of tremors has risen in and around Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture, since the largest one so far, a magnitude-7.3 temblor, struck at 1:25 a.m. on April 16 with its epicenter near the prefectural capital of Kumamoto."

So the quake has triggered movement northeast, per the OP, and also southwest...
