New York Yankees President Randy Levine is accusing GOP party insiders of "foul" play for their purported efforts to keep front-runner Donald Trump from winning the party's presidential nomination.

In a sharply worded article for conservative news site Newsmax, Levine, a lifelong Republican, suggested that unsportsmanlike conduct was at play among state and local officials' role in the GOP's nominating process.

"If a candidate garners the greatest number of votes, he or she should get the majority of delegates. That's the way elections are supposed to work," Levine wrote. "You win or lose on the field or at the ballot box. It is OK to play as a spoiler, as many teams do to affect the final standings, but if that is your goal you should acknowledge it."

ELECTION 2016: DELEGATE TRACKER

Citing Colorado's system of awarding its delegates at state and congressional district GOP conventions - instead of via direct primary election or caucuses - Levine blasted the Republican Party for its curveball of a process.

Former New York Yankee star Paul O'Neill showed up to Trump's news conference in Jupiter, Florida where he officially endorsed the Republican frontrunner. Talking about his victories in Michigan and Mississippi, Trump asked "Hey, Paul, you come from Ohio" where the baseball star replied "I'm here" on March 8, 2016.

Calling it "akin to a rainout that was never rescheduled or played" and "a game in which the umpires, not the players, decide the result," Levine wrote that "the reality is that ... certain party insiders and the party establishment do not like the results they are watching unfold on the field."

"They do not like what they see on the scoreboard, and they definitely do not like the standings," he added. "They do not like seeing Donald Trump on top. However, just as in the world of sports, a level playing field is required in the world of politics. "

Ted Cruz, who has utilized superior organizing efforts on the ground in several states, swept all of Colorado's 34 delegates in the vote-less allocation process.

Trump still leads Cruz 744-559 in the total delegate count and is unlikely to lose his lead, but his road to 1,237 - the amount of delegates he must win to secure the nomination - is now an uphill climb as he struggles to keep pace with Cruz's delegate operation.
