Quoting: kingshipThe monarch, who lived around 4,000 years ago, is likely to have been one of the earliest chieftains to take power in the continent. He was part of a new order which emerged in Europe following the Stone Age, sweeping away the previous egalitarian Neolithic period and replacing it with hierarchical societies which were ruled by a powerful elite. ori User ID: 71396929 United States 05/01/2016 01:22 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Hey Iset, I still think of you as Angels :) What got me interested in the Emerald tablet was a book I read recently, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. I saw you mention on another thread interest in the Philosophers stone. I really like some of his ideas on the thing. [link to www.shmoop.com] No surprises here: not only does alchemy show up over and over as Santiago tries to reach his treasure, it's in the title and everything. (That would be The Alchemist, if you're just joining us.) Of course, this isn't just a literal novel about alchemy, although that would be pretty cool, too. In Coelho's novel, Alchemy stands in for something else: personal evolution. We first learn about alchemy when Santiago meets the Englishman, who's reading about it while they wait for the caravan to head out. The narrator tells us, "All his life and all his studies were aimed at finding the one true language of the universe. First he had studied Esperanto, then the world's religions, and now it was alchemy" (2.90). Lumping alchemy in with a universal language and world religion shows us that alchemy is another way of understanding the language of the universe in this novel. And later, the alchemist tells us why: The alchemists spent years in their laboratories, observing the fire that purified the metals. They spent so much time close to the fire that gradually they gave up the vanities of the world. They discovered that the purification of the metals had led to a purification of themselves. (2.184) Get it? Alchemy is really not so much about being greedy and trying to turn everything you see into gold, like King Midas or Beyoncé, but rather about purifying yourself and your soul. While the alchemists of legends, and the one in the novel, are able to turn any metal into gold, Santiago's lesson is about becoming better in-tune with his heart and the universe. It's like the universe is an alchemist, purifying Santiago until he's a precious metal. |

No Greek original exists, though there are claims in the Arabic treatise that it was translated from the Greek into Syriac and from Syriac into Arabic by a well-known 9th-century translator, Yahyá ibn Bitriq. It appears, however, that the treatise was actually composed in Arabic. We can with certainty say that the section on physiognomy was circulating in Arabic before AD 940, for there is a manuscript now in the British Library (OIOC, MS Or. 12070) copied in 941/330 by one Muḥammad ibn ‘Alī ibn Durustawayh of Isfahan which contains this particular fragment of the treatise, though it is not called Sirr al-asrār. It antedates all references to the Sirr al-asrār (Secret of Secrets) and is earlier than all other known manuscript copies. It is likely that the treatise now known as The Secret of Secrets gradually evolved over a long period through the accretion of material on a wide range of topics, including statecraft, ethics, physiognomy, astrology, alchemy, magic, and medicine. A Latin translation of the Secret of Secrets from the Arabic was made in the mid-12th century by Joannes Hispalensis (preserved in some 150 copies) and again in the first half of the 13th century by Philippus Tripolitanus (preserved in more than 350 copies). It was extremely influential in Europe, where it was known as the Secretum secretorum and formed the basis of subsequent translations into Czech, Croatian, German, Icelandic, English, Castilian, Catalan, Portuguese, French, and Italian. It was also translated from the Arabic into Hebrew and then into Russian. Quoting: origin[link to galileogst.tumblr.com] |

Quoting: scienceIf you place various inanimate objects on a plasma ball, there are various responses. But if you place your finger on the glass, it concentrates the streamers. If you place a fresh cutting from a house plant on it the filaments follow it. You can also get a very bright shock by touching the end of a leaf. Life is conductive, but also constricts the flow of plasma filaments. So living creatures are the focus of these nodules. Exceptions obviously exist. Sometimes there may be a crab claw or the beak of a cephelopod. But it is possible that they were recently fragmented--like my branch from a house plant. [link to www.thunderbolts.info] |
