Is Trump a Draft Dodger?
He’s leading the Republican pack and loves to talk tough about ISIS, but it’s worth remembering that Donald Trump dodged the draft on five separate occasions and avoided military service at every opportunity.

I'm at a quandary here. I'm a vet and also support Donald Trump, but would like to know the other side of this story. Is there any truth to him dodging the draft?

A snip from the article:

Trump spent the war years beginning the journey from merely rich to super-rich.

It is just the truth.

Since I do not care about the military....still thinking Trump is your best choice.

Yeah he probably was a draft dodger he hates how the military is misused. If it were run how he liked and used only for defense im sure he wouldn't have dodged the draft.

I don't mind draft dodgers for political candidates as long as they do not advocate for a new war every six months.

Those types - we call them Chicken hawks. And I detest them.

I have a LONG list of Chicken hawks

The ones I detest.

Trump never even came to mind. Not on the list.

Go do something else

I saw this mention the other day on Democracy Now, they had a guest on who was going over Trumps mafia ties. He also said how Trump dodged the Vietnam draft due to bone spurs in his feet, then capped it off by saying how Trump loved to golf.

They were obviously not pro-Trump. Reaching just for the sake of talking shit on the Don.

Trump went to a military school and yes, they do base it on the military in discipline and you could go on into the military from one, some people do so.

Re: Is Trump a Draft Dodger?
So from 1964 to 1968 his record is saying 2-S which means collage deferment.
In 66 he also was classified as 1-A which means available for unrestricted military service but, he wasn't called up. He had the deferment anyway because he was in College. In 68 he had A-1 but didn't get called and 1-Y which means available only in emergencies such as a war (the US was never officially at war with Vietnam). I guess it changed to 1-Y because he was now older and out in the work force.

In 72 he had 4-F, Not acceptable for military service for a medical reason.

As Far as I see it he went to College from 64 to 68 to get an education. So what, a lot of men did. Getting an education made you exempt.
In 68 he didn't get called and his status changed to 1-Y because he was working and older. By 1972 the war in Vietnam was winding down and the US was starting to get out. Had he been classed 1-A and called it's unlikely he would have gone to Vietnam anyway.

Re: Is Trump a Draft Dodger?
I'm a combat vet. US Army 19 Delta Recon 1992.

Not everyone can be a soldier. Every citizen can't join the military or there'd be no one to run the country. Not every single person is meant to be a soldier.

I think the draft dodger meme started back in the old days when a Commander and Chief was expected to be a Vet. Those were the days of conventional warfare. Huge battles between tens of thousands of soldiers. The world does not work that way any more.

Warfare today is economic. It is assymetrical. It is strategic. In today's world you could technically say that Trump is a hardened General. He has successfully led a corporate army. The type it takes to run a country in today's world.

If he has a problem with someone like Hillary or Soros who are the real enemies of humanity, he can just order a drone strike or a heart attack gun.

I think most of the years he avoided the draft was when he was in college. As you know, men were were exempt while in college.

My husband was exempt while in college....around the same time as Trump. He graduated, and a year later we had a big wedding. We both had a great jobs, we settled down (we thought), and four months after the wedding (in 1968), he received his draft notice. We thought it was awful...our lives were disrupted. We were both 25 years old. I had to move again (the 4th time in a year) when he went to boot camp. The funny thing about it is that he ended up making the military a career as an officer, for 26 years. He was never in a combat role. I didn't agree with him making it a career, but it wasn't up to me. Looking back, it was an interesting life. We got to live in Europe and some interesting places. Certainly not boring. lol

Re: Is Trump a Draft Dodger?
Wars are meant to cull the herd of the best and brightest. Fighting a war is no longer noble thing to do as we know - they are resource wars, or Bankers' Wars.

Wars leave a generation of men who would be Stand up men - maimed, dead or in shell shock.

Leave this matter of "fighting for your country" to the days when we did not know exactly who was benefiting from the war - America has lost every war it has ever fought - and the cost of money and lives has weakened it - This is war tactic in itself. America is being destroying and it has been going on for 50 years.
Had a dream long ago which showed me the future and it was not pretty. Been watching closely ever since.

Correct. After getting automatic student deferrals while in college, a lottery was instituted, in the waning years of the war. Students who had graduated or deopped out would be automatically drafted normally, but when the lottery began, those who drew high numbers were exempt.
Both my brothers were lucky this way, like Trump, and avoided the draft.

 Quoting: train

Men of privledge were always protected by their wealth.
It is the way our system worked and if the draft should
unfortunately be enacted again, the same will happen today.
Trump lacked the balls to fight. His family knew that and
protected him with their attorneys filing for deferments.

Sadly the U.S. will likely never have a president that served in
the military during a time of war again. The courage to engage
an enemy whose sole purpose is to kill you doesn't truly
exist in 95% of those in the political arena. They speak out with
balls the size of a Bramah bull knowing that they are sending or
are willing to send others to die. No, not for your freedom, for
their friends in the corporate community and banking industry.
No, not for your interest, for the claiming of resources to aid the
profits for the corporations and banking industry they sent our
fathers, uncles, sons, and now daughters to collect and then protect.

My father and his twin brother both had the balls it took
to go and fight in Vietnam. They volunteered to
go and didn't wait to be drafted.
I know deep down they would have gone even if they were fortunate
enough to be born into wealth. They were the right type of men
who weren't and unfortunately still aren't afraid to stand up
and face down any thing that threatens them.

Donald Trump should count his blessings that he didn't go
to Vietnam. Fourty six years later it still affects both my father
and uncle in ways that he could never understand. Luckily both
my father and uncle have the balls it takes to keep fighting.
Whether it's the Vietcon in their memories or the Agent Orange
they were affected by, both have suffered since the mid 80's with
life changing illnesses brought on by both. Donald Trump should
consider himself in debt to men like my father and uncle. He owes
them more than he knows.
It's Headley.
