There's a quote that is (most likely falsely) attributed to Peter the Great who introduced first elements of parade into Russian army: "The subordinate facing his the superior must look dashing and silly, to not to disturb the authorities with his intelligence." But still, it's really a rule - privates must smile in such occasions, unlike officers who in contrast should be serious.
