The Assassins were a real secret society during the Crusades controlled by "The Old Man of the Mountain". He took young men and got them high on hashish brought them to the mountain
were he simulated heaven with the 72 virgins and such. These young men woke up in heaven (or so they thought)and then the Old Man took it away with the promise to return there when they died giving their lives in Jihad. These Assassins would leap out and stab those in power no matter if there were guards or not. The Assassins became very rich and powerful from tributes paid. The Assassins and the Crusaders (Freemasons) knew and admired each other because both sides had degrees and a pyramid structured secret society even though they fought on opposite sides during the Crusades. The rest is history.
