Delusions of Grandeur
Why is it we fight so hard to be special, to be noticed?
Are we not enough for ourselves?

Why do people care about celebrities? Are they not enough for themselves?

Why do people think that they can be the savior of mankind? Do they think mankind will welcome them with open arms?

Why do people think they are Jesus? Do they really think themselves that perfect?

Why do people wait for the world to end? Are our lives really that sad?

If the government is watching everybody, doesn't that mean we are all equally irrelevant?

Why do we tell stories of "Him" and "Her"? When we are just trapped in a machine...?

Re: Delusions of Grandeur
excellent questions

G-d spoke all these words, to respond:
"I am the Lord, your G-d,
Who took you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
You shall not have the gods of others in My presence.
You shall not make for yourself a graven image or any likeness which is in the heavens above, which is on the earth below, or which is in the water beneath the earth.
You shall neither prostrate yourself before them nor worship them, for I, the Lord, your G-d, am a zealous G-d, Who visits the iniquity of the fathers upon the sons,
upon the third and the fourth generation of those who hate Me,
and perform loving kindness to thousands [of generations],
to those who love Me and to those who keep My commandments." ~ Exodus 20:1-6

"Woe to those who say of the evil that it is good and of the good that it is evil; who present darkness as light and light as darkness, who present bitter as sweet and sweet as bitter." ~Isaiah 5:20

We have an incredible ability to justify ourselves to ourselves. It might even be a survival mechanism for when recognizing reality for itself is too sad for the ego to bear. Some say the depressed lack the ability to self-decieve. Because they see things for how they are they are more unhappy.

Those are just symptomsof a bigger issue. It is what happens when one does not acknowledge a spiritual source. A soul that is truly grounded needs none of those feels.

Are we not enough for ourselves?

Innate need for grouping/bonding. Competition for resources. More attractive/talented are rewarded.

Why do people care about celebrities? Are they not enough for themselves?

Live vicariously through an idealized being/life. Beauty/youth/weath.

Why do people think that they can be the savior of mankind? Do they think mankind will welcome them with open arms?

Heroes journey is echoed in a common storyline/theme humanity enjoys as a common fiction.

Why do people think they are Jesus? Do they really think themselves that perfect?

Religion facilitates extreme mental illness by placing a blurry line between logic, reason and possibility. Lines between reality and fantasy become blurred and in a some cases, indestinguishable.

Why do people wait for the world to end? Are our lives really that sad?

A popular religion fiction which serves to prove faith in belief wasnt wasted time.

If the government is watching everybody, doesn't that mean we are all equally irrelevant?

Most behavior is very predictable.

Why do we tell stories of "Him" and "Her"? When we are just trapped in a machine...?

We're all living a multi thousand year fiction, of our own making. Self fulfilling prophesy.

I agree that true spiritual mastery can only be found in those whi have moved passed the need to be gratified by others or the need to put themselves above others in order to feel their spiritual accomplishments have value. Unfortunately most get stuck at the "I'm-the-messiah" stage.

I often wonder if literally everything is an illusion. Some philosophers argued that other people weren't real, or ar least you can't prove they are. But if you act on that philosophy today you are delusion, and rightly so. Even though it could be true that some people aren't real, it's almost sort of a "gross" belief to have because it could enable you to justify some pretty awful behavior, a la the movie "Ex Machina"

I think the common link is human beings recognize their own uniqueness in the Animal Kingdom. We ARE set apart from all the other beings on this planet and that confuses and intrigues us. We reconcile the great question of 'What and Why am I' by pouring our energy into great works of human ingenuity. And its opposite of course.

One of those talents are that humans are fantastic storytellers. We want to see our fantasies play out, even IF we only do so vicariously through others and in the safety of our homes.

This is where mirror neurons come into play. Where if you see a person running on screen, the same parts of your brain will light up as if YOU were doing the running. That is why movies are fun.

People enjoy being entertained. Very much. And get bitter and resentful being bored. Which they often project outward as a faculty of the environment and not a personal problem. Staring as walls, never caught on as an activity really.

I think it comes down to attraction.

Think of each person as 'the star of their own show' like you say. The whole world's a stage...each person has there own world which they use to interact with others. You choose to share your world with others. The more attractive, interesting, talented, the world of a person is, the more it will pull others and their worlds closer together.

Hope that makes sense.

1) Some for peer validition
Some for peer dominarion
Some for the challenge

2) Idolization, be it for fame, wealth etc. Different circles celebrate different "celebrities"

3) A desire to see justice perhaps, whatever their version may be. Perhaps being aware of opposition from the begining mitigates the fact not everyone will agree. some believe they will be worshipped, take yw pick

4) The above, but with a book tellin em. Some do

5) Desire for change, detachment, depression...some peoples lives are that sad, if ir be just their "reality" or someone in desperate times.
3,4,5 cross bleed into each other a lot, with many "reasons" depending on personal variances.

6)Governement....meh. Corporation may monitor its employees workstations....dont mean a lot really.

7) 3,4,5 +, and being trapped in a machine is just one of thd interpretations floating round.

6)

Great answers applause

Would you say the common link between all of those is reality avoidance?
 Quoting: Kayli

Thanks. :)

Don't get me wrong. I love the fantasy world (obviously). I might even like it more than reality. I have always wished the fantasy world could be real. I do believe stories have all kinds of merit, and that the imagination should be cherished.

But it does seem like most people, not glp people but most people I know, aren't all that happy and so they seek anything and everything to distract themselves. You don't need to be a nobodytard to live in a fantasy world. People get that invested in all kinds of media and entertainment and mind altering substances. It's like a pick your poison kind of deal.

I guess we can only ever have our own experiences, and we are kind of the 'stars' of our own lives. Our own 'shows'. But so is everybody else. We are all only human. But we want to be something more.
 Quoting: Kayli

People enjoy being entertained. Very much. And get bitter and resentful being bored. Which they often project outward as a faculty of the environment and not a personal problem. Staring as walls, never caught on as an activity really.

I think it comes down to attraction.

Think of each person as 'the star of their own show' like you say. The whole world's a stage...each person has there own world which they use to interact with others. You choose to share your world with others. The more attractive, interesting, talented, the world of a person is, the more it will pull others and their worlds closer together.

Hope that makes sense.
 Quoting: Seer777

Is it also possible perhaps that people who are lacking in the qualities they see in others who have them tend to orbit around the people who have those qualities? The world of the lacker never intersects to a meaningful degree with the person they admire, but it still shapes and molds them.

Perhaps there are the types of people who 'orbit' and the types of people who are stars. And maybe that's where that metaphor comes from, along with the enigmatic 'star quality' some refer to.

I think that is true of anyone that becomes a focus point of a group.

Whether that be through leadership/family/religion/business/culture/ or the entertainment industry.

Like Jesus and the 12 disciples. He needed them just as much as they needed him.

The Sun could shine for a trillion years and if there is nothing to appreciate the warmth of the glow, then what's the point?
