C'mon, who is going to risk the mockery inherent in today's society by admitting they were a virgin when they married, or are still a single virgin??? I think the numbers are skewed to support the discontinuation of abstinence programs. Also, did they define "sex" for the purposes of the survey? If someone just had oral sex but no intercourse before marriage, does that count? What about a hand job, etc?? Stupid survey, irrelevant.... |

We had no birth control pill at that time, and I was not about to get pregnant out of wedlock. I came from a family of 8 children and knew first hand the tough job it is to raise babies. My husband of 38yrs and I dated three years and did not have sex before marriage. Of course 1yr he was in Nam lol.. I know many others just like me. |

First, what happened at the beginning of the 60s? The "sexual revolution". We go from 88% by age 44 to 91% by 30, but they weren't more chaste in the past? Let's look at some real numbers, instead of self-reported numbers. What were the number of unmarried teens giving birth in the 40s vs now? THAT will tell you the real story. |

Not quite true... you have to factor in unmarried teen pregancies and not unmarried teens giving births. Abortion would skew your data. |

FYI, the study, which appeared in the journal Public Health Reports, is based on data from the National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG), which is a survey that the US Centers for Disease Control conducts every 5-10 years. The new report uses data from the past 4 NSFGs (1982, 1988, 1995, and 2002). Sex was defined as vaginal intercourse. If you'd like to cite specific flaws in the study, by all means read the full study methodology (available at the link below) and tell us how the numbers are skewed. If someone just had oral sex but no intercourse before marriage, does that count? What about a hand job, etc?? Stupid survey, irrelevant.... Obviously. Did you catch this little nugget in the article? “The data clearly show that the majority of older teens and adults have already had sex before marriage, which calls into question the federal government’s funding of abstinence-only-until-marriage programs for 12- to 29-year-olds,” Finer said. Quoting: Stupid News ArticleUnder the Bush administration, such programs have received hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funding. That's the whole point of this "study".
