Mammalian meat allergy is an emergent allergy, increasingly prevalent in tick-endemic areas of Australia and the United States, occurring worldwide where ticks are endemic. Sensitisation to galactose-α-1,3-galactose (α-Gal) has been shown to be the mechanism of allergic [/b]reaction in mammalian meat allergy following tick bite. "You can bend it and twist it... As ticks are widely distributed around the world it is not surprising that mammalian meat allergy after tick bites has been reported in several countries other than Australia and the US. But the Pymble publicist knew something was very wrong. She was having allergic reactions to food she’d never had a problem with, like yoghurt, baked beans, and nuts. A few months before she’d been bitten by a tiny tick in her garden and had an extreme local reaction. ‘‘I tell you, I looked like the elephant man,” she says. “My whole head swelled up. It was not normal. I went to a number of doctors and they all went, ‘Oh yeah, you’ll be alright’.’’ None mentioned that a severe local reaction to a tick was a risk factor for developing mammalian meat allergy (MMA), an emerging allergy where the tick’s saliva changes a person’s immune system to start reacting to the meat of mammals — beef, pork, lamb and sometimes even dairy and gelatine. What Lenoir-Jourdan eventually discovered was that she’d acquired mammalian meat allergy from the tick bite, and she was in the 10 per cent of those who are also allergic to mammalian meat derivatives, like dairy and gelatine. “I found out that all the foods that were making me sick were either dairy or had meat derivatives in them. The nuts I was eating came from China, where they spray nuts with meat flavouring,” she says. "You can bend it and twist it... You can misuse and abuse it... But in some cases, it can trigger a dangerous and rare allergy to red meat. Thanks to the common paralysis tick, also known as Ixodes holocyclus, more than 800 people around Sydney’s northern beaches have developed a dangerous and otherwise extremely rare allergy to mammalian meat. Most humans don’t suffer any particular ill-effects from an Ixodes holocyclus bite. But in some people, the combination of tick proteins and a mammalian protein, injected in the tick’s saliva as it bites for a blood meal, are enough to trigger a potentially life-threatening allergy. Thought I was gonna die. When I realized I wasn't, I began hoping I would. I lost over 40 pounds in two weeks. Only thing that saved me was drinking over a gallon of colloidal silver I brewed Took two months before I could look at food. Felt like I had anorexia. The thought of eating was repulsive. And I was as weak as a kitten for about 4 months. My only lingering side effects are tinnitus and occasional numbness in extremities. I was lucky. Two guys died from it the same time I was stricken. Horrible experience |

I read about this the other day while researching allergies to beef and milk. I've always thought I was lactose intolerant. I cannot have anything from a cow however. No dairy no beef. I'm also allergic to penicillin which cows are given. If I even have any little bit of beef/milk I get serious diarrhea and a rash. I don't remember ever being bitten by a tick. Maybe I should see an allergist. NoTfOoLeD |
