It's a mushroom cloud, you nonce. They do that. All that energy and super-heated particles ... the same happens during volcanic eruptions.

we have this in Colorado where there are clouds to the east but not over us. its normal.

In Texas...seen many-a-thunderstorm...this happens all the time. Its just a form of lightning

The terms sheet lightning or intra-cloud lightning (IC) refers to lightning embedded within a cloud that lights up as a sheet of luminosity during the flash. A related term, heat lightning, is lightning or lightning-induced illumination that is too far away for thunder to be heard. Lightning can also travel from cloud-to-cloud (CC). Spider lightning refers to long, horizontally traveling flashes often seen on the underside of stratiform clouds."

This does not look unusual to me but the video may not have shown what you saw.

We have a lot of lightening here and it can be bad. But zippy lightening in cloud really put a light in the sky.

That's regular old cloud to cloud lightning. Most lightning is cloud to cloud.

yes and common to see early evening where I live when there is AGAIn a storm to the east over the plains.

Wow, i just read the comments here and on the YouTube video. People are really classy these days.

I just thought this was neat. I love weather and i especially love a good storm. We still haven't had the storm though. Big chance tomorrow. BTW before the Joplin tornadoes these were seen by many people.

I've seen it before. Freaked me out when I saw it for the first time too. I was told it was "heat lightning".

We call it "heat lightening".


Where its happening
thunder can be heard along
with the storm.

Because the storm is far away,
you can't hear the thunder.

It is heat lightning, but I guess it really has nothing to do with heat, but it's just a storm too far away to hear the thunder. But like I said no storm.

While it may not be normal for your area, that is completely normal around here.

I have seen dry lightning happen before. It looks exactly the same and I always have crawled up on my roof to watch it, enjoy it!

Having it stay in the area of that one cloud is normal too. I have seen it stay in one place for a while then hours later it sudden starts happening in another spot.

I have seen this out in NV, remotely as recently as last summer and also above my house once several years ago. Similar to your scenario, no noise, etc. I thought it was either some unknown (to us) tech or, yeah, A L I E N S....

Looks to me like you just so happen caught the edge of a cold/warm front. I bet it was moving to your right, wasn't it?

What I mean is, you were south and looking north. Or, you were north and looking south.

Heat lighting is my opinion. Have seen lighting like that many times in the mid west.
