I'm not geography expert but Papua New Guinea is no where near Syria...

Cannibalism has long been a practice in many parts of the world; I think the article meant that the kuru disease appeared to have finally died out in New Guinea. Looks like it didn't confine itself to that one final location and spread somewhere else--autopsies can confirm the presence of kuru in the body. One of the Shoebat articles mentioned the 2 Syrians that were in a German hospital where it was diagnosed.
