he did this a couple of years ago, and rumors ranged from a mistress to his assassination. his absence coincided with a big fire in some major Russian city, leading to speculation of a coup.
then he turned up like nothing happened.

Considering the fact that Kremlin controls the media and has an army of trolls making sure nothing negative about the state of affairs in Russia leaks out (by diverting attention to other things, among others) it is really hard to say what is really happening there. considering the us has an army of online trolls starting vague rumours about Putin, it's hard to say.
