Correct procedure for informing a police officer you are carrying a lawfully concealed weapon | |

I roll down the window and make sure the officer can see my hands as I prepare. I hand over all three cards at the same time. When he walks up, I keep my hands where he can see them and address him in a friendly, professional manner. I always make sure to pull over in a well-lighted area where he can see what I am doing. If I have passengers, I advise them to keep their hands on the dash where the officer can see them. NEVER fail to disclose your concealed carry permit. That is a crime in itself in most states. NEVER fail to precisely follow directions. This advice goes double if you are a minority that may be considered crime or violence-prone. What happened in MN was a tragedy. Let us pray for cool heads and justice be served. |

There is no disclosure mandate in Florida. But I agree it usually is better to just let the officer know for both your sake. But there have been instances I had interactions with the police and didn't tell them . And I was fine. But I will say I only forgo notification in circumstances I know there will be no investigation of me or my effects. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 71886315 But the fact remains this law is about as useful as a no gun sign. Absolutely ridiculous and useless. And let's not even discuss the fact about SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED. I hear ya pal. But this pertains to a street level stop. This is NOT the time to start reciting the constitution or bill of rights when you are carrying a gun . True story . A man out on indiatlantic got pulled over near where I live. The he disclosed to the police officer her had a permit and was carrying . The cop went apeshit pulled his gun . Freakin carrier almost got shot . Later when the cop was asked why he reacted so crazy and pulled his gun . Cop : At that time I wasn't aware it was lawful for a private citizen to carry a firearm in any manner nor did I know about " conceal carry weapons and firearms permit " . I thought the guy was lying to me just so I didn't shoot him . THE COP DIDN'T EVEN KNOW CONCEAL CARRY EXISTED . You wanna start arguing your rights with a guy like that when you have a gun on you ? I don't . |

I've been disarmed and given my weapon back as a passenger in a vehicle where the driver had weed (and his weapon) on him. Trust me, I know how to play the game. Still.... |

Quoting: ShiftShaper Agreed, but I believe they know if you have a permit if they scan your plates (too bad you can't tell if a criminal has a weapon this way). Then, when you fail to inform, you've broken the law. Not to mention some cops think you have to tell them even if you aren't carrying that day (which you always should be). |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 70749387 You: ( Place your hands at 10 and 2 on the steering wheel if driving. If you are a passenger place your hands on the dashboard. If you have passengers instruct them to do the same.) Officer at this time I would like to inform you for both of our safety I am holding a valid conceal carry permit and am currently concealing a firearm , what do you want me to do ? Then you simply sit there and wait for his commands. And then, BANG! Settled it. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 7227274 ![]() 07/07/2016 03:31 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Good advice OP. In our state your gun must be under control of the CCW at all times. What this means is that if you carry in the glove box and you have a passenger it damn well better be locked. Because the passenger (who probably hasn't a CCW) can get access to the weapon. Ya I know lame, but put it under the drivers seat if you have a passenger. |

The only thing I would add. . is take the keys out of the ignition and put them on the dash board in plain sight while your hands are at the 10 and 2 o'clock position. I have my wallet up there as well so when he or she asks for drivers license what I am reaching for is in plain sight. |
