what do you mean haywire ?  Flipping wildly from half-pole to half-pole, N to W, back and forth. (I have a standard magnetic and a smart phone app which uses GPS(!)) UPDATE: NEVER MIND. I found this on Spaceweather.com: "Earth's magnetic poles are active today, July 12th, as minor geomagnetic storms occur in response to a fast-moving solar wind stream." Should have known. Since we are so close to the SC escarpment, funny things happen with electromagnetics.
