More than 200K litres of oil leaks into North Saskatchewan river
More than 200,000 litres of oil spilled into the North Saskatchewan River on Thursday, following the break in a pipeline.

On July 21, Husky Energy reported a pipeline break approximately 30 kilometres east of the Border City, to the Ministry of Environment around 10 a.m.

Mel Duvall, a media spokesperson for Husky Energy, explained in a statement, how upon notification of the release, response actions were taken.

Cleanup crews and equipment were quickly deployed to the site, following the shut in and isolation of a pipeline on its Saskatchewan Gathering System.

“Berms are in place at the site and containment booms have been deployed along the river,” he added.

A report from Husky, said the pipeline transports a blend of heavy oil and diluent from the company’s operations in the field to the facilities in Lloydminster.

Attempts to stop a pipeline oil spill from flowing down a major river in Saskatchewan failed Friday and new steps were being taken to try to contain the slick.

A government official said booms placed on the North Saskatchewan River by Husky Energy to contain the spill were ineffective because high water levels lifted the oil over the barriers.

The official, who did not want to be named, said Husky Energy (TSX:HSE) and the government were placing booms further downstream and increasing skimming to try to remove oil from the water.

Between 200,000 and 250,000 litres of crude oil and other material leaked into the river on Thursday from a breach in Husky’s pipeline near Maidstone, Sask
