Where are all the worms?!

I'm mostly serious here..

I seem to recall that after every heavy rain there would be puddles and the smell of dead worms. Everyone I've asked recently agrees that worms crawling out of the ground when it got too wet was/(is?) a normal thing.

So, what happened? The metro area of the Twin cites seems to be completely without worms. No one really seems to remember when it happened, but once I mention it.. they immediately know that this normal occurrence has stopped.

We all agree something changed, in that way I am serious. But we don't know why, in that way I'm not so serious, as I expect there is a good answer??

So worms? still crawl out of the ground where you're at? is there a good reason they wouldn't anymore? google doesn't seem to think so.
