Modern internal combustion engines were designed to run on vapour fuel, not liquid.

Carbs and fuel injectors do not atomize the fuel, they simply force the fuel through nozzles creating smaller droplets of fuel, not vapour fuel.

Most of a fresh intake charge is wasted on the power stroke as liquid fuel cannot burn, it simply gets dumped out the exhaust as unburnt fuel.
