Mrs Robinson is a rather taboo subject, and so it tends to make people feel uncomfortable. This happens because they have fallen under the spell of what I call Mrs Robinson Syndrome.
Mrs Robinson Syndrome is a condition where someone's position on Mrs Robinson is so fixed and certain, that it precludes them from considering any other possibility. They have been irretrievably blinded to the evidence of what really happened between Mr Robinson and his wife, because they are too busy fighting for their own interpretation. This makes the world feel more like an us-versus-them scenario.
This is not a new problem. There was actually a group of people called the Rationalists, who had been trying to combat this kind of narrow-mindedness for many years before I came into existence. They were less successful than they would have liked because there are significant barriers that prevent rationalism from taking hold.
For example, there are many people who think that they have a particular view of the world. They don't want to change that view because it's deeply personal and based on their own life experiences. How can someone else tell them what they believe? It just doesn't make sense.
You can see that there is a conflict between someone's personal experiences and the idea of being open to other perspectives. This isn't unique to Mrs Robinson Syndrome, but it does make it more likely.
It gets worse when you get into more complicated situations. Imagine someone who has been raised in a very conservative family, and they have certain ideas that are deeply ingrained in them. Even if those ideas seem silly from other perspectives, it still feels like an attack on their personhood to challenge them.
