37 and gone back to school, it's official... Humanity is losing intelligence.
Moving from web development to robotic/mechanical automation for a second career. Sitting here at my station in class having already mastered the chapter and completed the homework, not bragging, truly not hard stuff... basic math for basic electronics material. 3/4 of the class is currently huddled together, WITH calculators, trying to figure out how to work out a 20% +/- tolerance on a value of 2200. It's taking so long I decided to post about it and they are still working it. This type of occurrence happens each class so far. Even with calculators they are struggling often.

Except for the older guys in my one night class, all my other classes exhibit the same characteristics. I was less confidant and experienced at that age, but neither I or my classmates at large were this damn slow 20 yrs ago.

Good move OP....

I just passed a Comptia exam through self study and am working on another one. I'm semi retired but look young for my age. If I can take a job away from someone who voted for the current clown, that will be icing on the cake.

Good luck, OP. I know the Robotic/Mechanical Automation fields are taking off like rockets these days. You should be able to find work easily enough once you've completed your desired courses. You should also be able to easily top those idiots struggling with very basic math stuff too. thumbs

Not true with engineering. I had to go from being a top flight machine design engineer in my mid 30’s to a aerospace design engineer figuring out if one thousand "rivets" are too close or too far apart, if the edge of the parts put together with said "rivets" are to close or too far from said "rivets" and if a mechanic can install said "rivets". On rare occasions I fundamentally change the way the parts are configured. All that is the interesting part. Then there is all the dreary computer input that makes this stuff get put on engineering "drawings" or the computer equivalent of said drawings.

Now they are bringing over 3 dollar an hour Indians working for Indian companies to do the dreary stuff. Then someone like me has to fix all there fuckups with 90 precent if the time and budget gone.

Northing is safe. This civilization needs a whole rethink. The money printing fuckers are parasites and sucking up too many resources. They make life for us unbearable for us. You would think those assholes would have enough sense to keep us happy. Nope like any psychopath they have to play it close to the thrilling edge of destruction.

My "corporate" job, as I suspected, was outsourced. After 20 yrs of working for others I decided to go out on my own though my heart is just not into keeping up with the field in general anymore. As with most product/services, there's a level of educating consumers that's a challenge. Most small businesses go the easy website builder route and don't want to hear about the limitations they will face and pay more for a professional to do a site for them. Can't really fiscally compete with either of those contingencies, but the bottom line was I wanted to be happy again. So I got rid of all debt aside from house, all non essential payments like new cars, cable, etc... And strung together a couple pt flexible gigs, go to school full time as of this semester (in what is becoming known as mechatronics) and do some web dev and Aquaponics system building on the side as it comes up. It's been 3 yrs of now, haven't increased my debt and feel like I haven't worked a day since leaving the corp world. My chosen field is more of a fall back and I'm going to enjoy it, but secretly hope not to have to work for any beast again. But without a doubt, as more and more people lose their jobs to automation, I'll still have a chance at one.

It's forced me to rid myself of bloat and adjust and prepare for a different world. One where self sustainability and ingenuity will set you apart. And I don't have to dread doing the same damn thing all my life. I'm always looking to be more well rounded and diversified.

This is like my eighth career.

Lumberjack, house painter, vending machine entrepreneur, Army officer, hospital administrator, economist, aerospace engineer, and now....metal coatings engineer with my own manufacturing company.

Oh yeah, I started mowing lawns for money when I was so young the mower handle was higher than my head which made it really difficult to push! I spent every penny on science fiction books to read.

Right now I am working on training the young people to take over my company teaching them chemistry and materials science. At the same time, we are working on some new coatings that can withstand a 10,000 hour salt spray corrosion test.

Almost forgot, I am a part time farmer as well.

As St. Heinlein once said, "Specialization is for insects".

I barely remember my 37th year.

Mechatronics is engineering. Best explained as the marriage of electrical/mechanical with some industrial automation. This is my chosen field for cross training.

Yes, that's really fucked. Sometimes some of them hire a programmer and ask him to use Wix, Weebly or such a shit, damn I'm a programmer, I want to do coding. Also the people from third world countries who charge ridiculous amount for the work are another trouble. I'm also a web developer.

But, as I am reading Time Enough for Love, I begin to think THAT is his greatest work.
