i find it more saddening that at least 3 months went by without his children visiting him.

I bet she has a reason for that.

I did until two years ago, now I'm just neutral about it.

Well after reading this maybe you should contact your Dad.Unless you don't care either. So sad that some kids could care less about what happens to their parents.

Since being widowed, I've done some research on social isolation (yup, I'm isolated). Turns out the consensus is, if you're OK with your level of isolation (not depressed, unhappy, lonely, etc) then it doesn't affect your mental health adversely. If you are feeling lonesome, then get some help, volunteer, etc.

I looked on line for a quiz to quantify social isolation, and decided this would be a good one:

You have died alone in your home. Your body is discovered
a) within the hour
b) within a day
c) within a week
d) after the cat has eaten your face, and the smell is horrific
e) by archaeologists in the future

Re: He died alone in his own home and nobody was notified!
I am ticked off! I was a care giver for a veteran for a year following a quadruple heart bypass surgery. I hadn't heard from him since December last year as his phone was disconnected. I had asked around to see if anybody else had seen or heard from him, and the answer was always 'no'.

2 days ago, I got a call from his mortgage lady (I drove him to all of his appointments with Dr.s, bank, mortgage, etc. so I knew everybody) and she wanted to know if I had seen or heard from him. I told her no, but she could call the Sheriff and have them do a safety check on him. She called them and called me back. The Sheriff was called back in June to go check on him, and found him dead in his home. There had been a nurse there 2 days in a row to check on him, but when she didn't get an answer, she called the Sheriff to go in.

This is what ticks me off the most... THERE WAS NOTHING POSTED OR PUBLISHED ANYWHERE ABOUT HIS DEATH! My name and number was all over the place so that someone should have called me...but not one call! He has 2 children and they had to find out that their dad died 3 FRICKEN MONTHS AGO! ALONE!

What happened to his body? Do the kids get to say good bye? Does he get a funeral or service? This is SO WRONG!

So, I am making it my mission to ask people get to know the people who live alone in their homes in your neighborhood, and find out if they have family that needs to be notified in the event they pass away. If nothing else post it on their refrigerator for them so if a Police officer or EMT comes in, the info is readily available. At least the family would be notified...
 Quoting: Ab1Dance

...and when the paycheck was gone you didn't keep looking in on him and are complaining no one notified you of his death.

Priceless

Re: He died alone in his own home and nobody was notified!
From the original post:

Police found him after two days.
Other people (O.P.) did not find out this happened for three months.

He wasn't dead at home for three months. He was dead at home for TWO DAYS. A nurse who looked in on him daily notified police, they checked it out. But, for some reason, they didn't tell anyone... Not even his family... He had died.

But, the moral of the story is, don't let your loved one be at home with no working phone in this day and age. (This man's phone was disconnected and his daughter lived in Los Angeles.)

This all is a horrible topic and shouldn't happen to people.

I hope to die sitting at the bus stop or maybe at the coffee shop. Then at least they can take me to the morgue before I rot.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 71374357

I always hoped I would die of old age on a roller coaster, and no one notices for a few hours. And my body keeps going for the ride, again and again.

Imagine having to give the eulogy for that one??

I wouldn't be able to stop laughing if I had to give a eulogy like that.

I want my funeral to be a comedy like that.

"Well, Bob died doing what he liked best...etc", and then maybe show some video of the roller coaster going again and again.

spanky-waitn
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73013891

if that happened to the vast majority of us on here, the eulogy vid could be a bit more awkward

Re: He died alone in his own home and nobody was notified!
What about a website? People could create an account with a contact name or whatever. The person just needs to log in every so often. Maybe they get to choose the interval themselves. If they don't log in, the website automatically contacts someone for a welfare check. Granted, people would need a way to access the internet. Even better, the website could prompt a phone call or something. After three calls and no login, maybe it could then go to welfare check.

Maybe something like this already exists?

No one should feel all alone, and I'm sorry about the posters here who feel they are. I live alone currently, and I've had a few accidents/issues myself. (Got the stomach flu once, fainted in the shower, that sort of thing. Hit my head on a kitchen cabinet another time.) I do have family, and I do talk to people regularly, but it has occurred to me that something could happen to me and no one would know until I didn't show up to work or whatever. If it happened over the holidays, it could be awhile before anyone found me. Even worse, I currently freelance. So no one would even notice if I didn't show up anywhere. Yikes!

Same thing will happen to me OP, it's no big deal really...

No friends, no family, retired veteran, etc....

I know for fact the dogs will eat my body once I'm dead, then they will break out and run wild.

This damn pit will probably eat all my bones too. I will simply vanish without explanation...

Then you need to get out and do volunteer/charity work! Not a lot, just something on a regular basis. Or get involved in something you believe in.

What does he care. He's no longer there. Hope he left a lot of unpaid bills behind.

His daughter did try to call him, they live in the LA area. But like I said, his phone was disconnected. Now there is a big to-do about the property... abandoned, foreclosure, and sale. Not to mention the cleanup. And chances are the kids won't get a thing.

He hadn't talked kids and almost 20 years. When he had his heart attack, I convinced him to call them. They all cried and promised to keep in touch with each other. They lived 400 miles apart and were unable financially to make the Trek and either direction. I did give him a cell phone but he didn't want it and gave it back. He had his own cell phone and promised to turn it back on. He was doing well and was capable of taking care of himself. He was the one who cancelled employment.

My doctor at the VA ordered one of those alert things that hangs around your neck. all you do is press the button and it calls 911. two of my neighbors have called the sheriff to check on me at different times. also i get the newspaper delivered to my home so that if they see papers piling up in the driveway they will know things are not good. i pay for a year at a time. we are all going to leave this body one day.
