Kmart is closing 64 more stores and laying off thousands of employees — see if your store is on the list
Kmart is closing 64 stores across 28 states.

Sears Holdings, which owns Sears and Kmart, informed Kmart employees of the closures on Friday, according to several local news reports and multiple employees who spoke with Business Insider.

The stores that are closing will begin liquidation sales on September 22 and close by mid-December, employees said.

Sears did not respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

Separately on Friday, Seritage Growth Properties, a real-estate investment trust that owns 235 Sears and Kmart stores, revealed in a filing that Sears had decided to terminate leases on 17 stores, meaning it would close those stores.

According to RBC Capital Markets analysts, all 17 closures are Kmart stores and they will close by January.

The new wave of closures follows Sears' decision to shut down nearly 80 stores — most of which were Kmart stores — in July. Moody's analysts warned last week that Kmart doesn't have enough cash or access to cash to stay in business. Kmart has about 870 stores today, down from about 1,300 in 2012.

Here's a full list of stores that will close in December, according to employees: [link to www.businessinsider.com]

Nearest one to me was Abeliene Texas and its closing. Really it was like a giant oldschool walmart/dollar store. Kinda cool to go into like stepping back in time. Oh well, new world order it is

No. But one here in western NC was listed before was one to close in June. They are still open. No going out of business signs...nothing.

I don't mind K-Mart so much, near work and I can run in and out during lunch to grab something. Beats the hell outta Walmart. Only the ones here anymore are crappy and not well kept. The Sears here is crappy. The clothing departments look like a thrift shop and it just feels dirty when you walk in there.

They really had awful clothes. It is like they tried to make them ugly on purpose. And expensive. I am not surprised they are going under.

I'll miss the clearance sales they had though, like a week ago I got a Linksys router at Kmart for $2.49 (regular price was like $39.99).

Of course that same router sells at Walmart for $24.99 ...

One of the reasons they have failed -- their regular prices on most items were way to high ...

I'll miss my occasional trips there though, was very relaxing to go spend some quiet time there while shopping (the place was always so quiet, like a library) ... and my bank has a branch there also (the main reason I would go)

The Kmart here closed down a few months ago. it was literally a shithole, had crappy floors, the aisles were scattered and ramshackle, they usually had one cashier there because it was always slow.

It was really a crappy place to shop. Always wondered how it stayed open that long.

When they had clearances, whoa, were things marked down big time. The women in my life bought up Bratz sets and collectible Barbie dolls that were 30 dollars and up at Walmart , they bought it at Kmart for 6-11 dollars.

Yeah. I'll miss their clearance sales too. Their clearance sales were some of the best things in town for rock bottom prices for nearly everything. Electronics would usually be for dirt cheap prices yet some feminine beauty crap would still be a few dollars cheaper than their already exorbitantly high prices.

I find this to be hilarious though. Just a month or two ago my mom was lauding to me that K-Mart was one of the best stores around because they finally learned their corporate lesson and got put into their place. Now that K-Mart is just about dead entirely... I can't help but to feel like saying to her "Hah!" about this.

They closed one near me. Hadn't been to that store in probably 15 years.

They had just brought back the Blue Light special the last time I was in ours two weeks ago -- too little, too late.

And too many years of charging too much -- can't compete that way.
