I know it's common, at least once a month. With that being said, I have noticed it occurring a lot more frequently in the past few weeks... all all forms of media. September is national preparedness month. I even got an email from Walmart to remind me to be 'prepared ' and stock up.

I've never heard the loud speakers in this area...EVER! 2.5 years I've been here.

The timing to me is suspect given this is the first time I;ve ever heard actual outside loud speakers broadcasting some dudes voice that this is an emergency test.

concerning to say the least

I had to walk outside because I could hear commotion and a buzz alert but couldn't make it out.

Not even sure where the heck the speakers are but they sounded pretty far away!

checked a few people in the area and thus far seems exclusive to my town. So, no alarms intended and hoping just local test,.

All broadcasters are required to do weekly and monthly EAS tests. Though they are not supposed to, many confine them to the middle of the night. Used to be, the DJ on the air (I was one for many years) would do it at the beginning or the end of a commercial block, but these days, with so much automation in use, there's usually nobody in the control room, so the weekly tests the station does gets placed in the automation log.

The monthly test is initiated by the local station that has been deemed the master station for the area, and must be run by all receiving stations within a certain amount of time after getting the EAS test activation. I think it's an hour. If a station has someone in the control room, they'll find a place for it in the log over the next hour. If not, at the end of the time limit, it will just interrupt programming, no matter what's on th air. Music, commercials, jock talk, etc...The EAS seizes control of the station and gives it back after the EAS test is finished running.

Here in Indiana it used to be the first Wednesday of each month at noon. They started increasing in frequency the past couple years and now they are happening all willly nilly. None today though. Yet.....

This happened on a Naval Air Station not long far from my house. Sounded like air raid sirens. Thought nothing of it because of living in Florida and it being a tornado/hurricane drill.
