Thinking about getting a Ruger Mini 14. Any opinions?
I already have an AR. I like the platform a lot but it's not my favorite. I'm accustomed to deer rifles (.270 and .300 Win Mag are favorite chambering choices of mine). I like how they point and how they naturally meet your cheek when you shoulder them.

I've been looking at Ruger Mini 14s for a while. They have the same action as an M1A (rotating bolt) which I like a lot. The price is just over $700 for a new one with a nice wood stock. That's a good price for Ruger quality if you ask me.

If I ever wanted to go the "tacti-cool" route with it (not likely), there are replacement stocks available. 30 round mags are available from Ruger (they're $25 which is pretty high).

Anybody got one of these? I'd like to hear your take on them. I've never shot one.

Re: Thinking about getting a Ruger Mini 14. Any opinions?
The Mini 14 is a gas piston design whereas most ARs (including my own) are direct gas impingement systems. Both are good systems and have their strengths and weaknesses.

In a SHTF situation, I'd say that the Mini 14 and the AR would both perform the same function more or less equally. Neither one is ideal for combat (a 30 cal rifle would be better, IMHO) but they would serve well as hunting rifles for medium and even large game (under the right circumstances).

They offer other calibers, which would offer more knock down power.

I've owned both the mini 14 and the mini 30.

Great guns, just not so accurate. 4 MOA.

Perfectly fine for close quarters protection.

The SKS is another fine choice.

Mini-14 is also available in .300 Blackout.

Buy only Ruger magazines, I have had trouble with aftermarket knockoffs. There are gun accessory companies out there that have adjustable gas blocks and other options to dial in the accuracy of this fine weapon.

I'll probably do that too. I have many rifles and yet I always need more. Shooting is a hobby that I share with my son and anything that gets us spending quality time together is a good thing in my book. A new firearm is just another excuse to go to the range with my son and spend the day having a good time sighting it in and testing it out.

The mini 14 is a solid rifle. Cleaner and more reliable than an AR-15. The AR is more accurate though, whether it's new or accurized. But the mini can be accurized as well. Won't shoot as tight of groups, but they get the job done. Mine shoots 2 inch groups at 100 yards. Fine with me. And my Tapco mags do just fine too.

awesome!

I am no expert but from what I have gathered the Mini might have a longer life span as far as the internals and the way the gun operates, where as an AR will need replacement parts if your thinking long term and tens of thousands of rounds shot through it. Think the bolt, bolt carrier group ect.

The AR is usually more accurate and the thicker barrel design allows for more rapid fire shots fired through it at a time, which might be useful in a fire fight. If you get the Mini get the new one with a thicker barrel.

IF I could only have one I would go AR with extra bolts, parts, .22 conversion kits, and buy more ammo.

I think the trade off is like this:

A mini has longer-lasting parts but they are more expensive to replace when they finally give out (although they should last a lifetime under normal operating conditions).

An AR has overall pretty long-lasting parts with a large variety and price-range of replacement parts. AR parts are everywhere. Everybody is making them. Hell, Kellogg's will probably start putting them in cereal boxes as prizes.

Since I already have an AR, I'll get a Mini to screw around with. They hold their value pretty well so I can always sell it if I don't like it. I can't imagine that I wouldn't like it though. It's got everything I like in a rifle.

It's a cherry of a rifle and will reach out and touch a deer at 500 yards (that's with MY skill level...an expert rifleman could pull off 800+ on a good day).

Bought new. First trigger mech had problems; whole firing mechanism would eject. Store swapped with mech out of another Mini-30 next day and has been flawless since. Stock trigger is fine for me. It can be modified by a gunsmith if you want to lighten the pull, but isn't necessary imo.

I doubt that a barrel changeover to convert to .300 BLK is that simple. The gas block has to be adjusted as well for the .300 BLK.
