The Pleiades have been venerated throughout history and for very good reason. I need to preface this by saying we have examined Mesoamerican culture and their monuments closely and carefully. We all know about the Spanish invasion of the Americas. What most people don't know is that they committed many atrocities against the indigenous of the Americas AND they made things up to make them appear to be savages, much like what happened later in North America with the Native Americans and the Manifest Destiny.

Okay so looking at Chichen Itza there are 13 ballcourts and one of them is the infamous one where "supposedly" a ball game was played whereby the captain of the winning team was executed (beheaded) and this was supposed to be a BIG honor (sic).

Well, when one looks closely at the ballcourt and ball hoops it becomes evident that that type of game (using thigh and chest mainly) could not really be possible. For one thing the vertical hoops sit very near the top of the walls about 24 feet from the ground and directly under the hoop is an extended platform rather than open field inhibiting players being as close to the hoops as one might expect if it was designed for a ball game.

There's more but I won't bore anyone with the details. The Spanish victors telling of history is that they performed ritual sacrifice and through their dead into the sacred cenote. It's much more likely that the Spanish executed them and tossed them there.

That brings us to the Aztecs and their New Fire Ceremony which they still observe in a dazzling and beautifully colored festival. It basically is recognized as something they felt they had to do to stave off the end of the world.

They utilize a 52 year calendar that places the Pleiades directly overhead at midnight on the night of the ceremony. I won't fill in the pieces now but looking at this ceremony and looking at that Alcyone diagram I posted one can kind of get the idea.
These are old - ancient time honored beliefs (rituals actually) and the need to be taken seriously SIRIUSLY ;)
