I believe it is a genetic predisposition. Manifested to it's greatest in early adulthood when social anxiety due to the surge of social responsibility kicked in.

I take a low dose of anti-psych medication and it keeps it check. Really not as bad as people claim definitely beats the alternative of 'strong delusion'.

Religion can be helpful in the lives of people with no internal moral compus and need someone or text to guide them intellectually and spiritually. They need the social emotional control and support of a community of like minded people.
