Funeral of British WW2 Veteran 92, which was expected to have just 5 mourners inundated with 100's paying their respects
Hundreds of mourners gathered to pay their respects to a Second World War veteran after only a handful were expected at his funeral.

Douglas Oswald Shallcross, 92, survived a deadly grenade blast and was twice run over by tanks while fighting against the Germans on the Western Front.

After the war he returned to his hometown of Marple, Greater Manchester, where he worked in a steel factory and met Doreen, who would later become his wife.

He died last week and his daughter Anne Holloway and her children were among the few people expected to attend his funeral yesterday.

But a group of veterans launched a public appeal and hundreds responded, arriving at Highfield Cemetery, Romiley, to give Mr Shallcross the send-off he deserved.
Born and raised in Marple, Mr Shallcross was a soldier in the Reconnaissance Corps during the War.

He served in the D-Day landings and celebrated his 21st birthday under fire on a French battlefield, where his sergeant sneaked him a bottle of beer to mark the occasion.
