Apollo 7
Apollo 8--first manned mission to the moon. Mission lasted 6 days and 3 hours, they orbited the moon 10 times in 20 hours. Televised crew-broadcast on Christmas morning--most watched TV event of the time.

1968 was a horrible year.

January--The Tet Offensive in Viet Nam showed that the US was not winning the war any time quickly.

April--Martin Luther King, Jr. was murdered in Memphis. This sparked a week of terrible riots.

June--Robert Kennedy, who was running for the Democratic nomination was killed after winning the California primary.

August--The Democratic Convention was marred by what a commission later branded a "police riot." (some may differ with that conclusion).

November--Richard Nixon was elected President.

The War in Viet Nam was going on the entire year.

I was 17 and thought the world had gone mad.

My dad died, I started 8th grade, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was on at the movies, the democrats passed a terrible gun control bill, the hippies were hipping all over the place, Jimi was layin down the acid blues and I got a job roofing houses.

we reached the halfway point of a 200 billion dollar war called Vietnam that put the country into debt and primed the pump for the oil price shocks of the 70's thata lead to deindustrialization, price inflation, and 20% interest rates that we have never recovered from...

to rub salt into the wounds, actuarials in the pentagon had been working on the vietnam numbers going back to 1959 with ibm business machines now called computers, all to prepare the international energy trust into pulling us by the ear to take over from the French...and we thank you for your excellent question...
