CRISPR gene-editing tested in a person for the first time
A Chinese group has become the first to inject a person with cells that contain genes edited using the revolutionary CRISPR–Cas9 technique. On 28 October, a team led by oncologist Lu You at Sichuan University in Chengdu delivered the modified cells into a patient with aggressive lung cancer as part of a clinical trial at the West China Hospital, also in Chengdu.

The introduction of CRISPR will probably accelerate the race to get gene-edited cells into the clinic across the world...

I'm not familiar either but I would imagine, as with most things, it has equal potential for both malice and benefit

Injecting MAN-MADE gene-editing immune cells which "attacks" certain proteins -

What possibly could go wrong?

"DNA-cutting enzyme with a molecular guide that can be programmed to tell the enzyme precisely where to cut. The disabled gene codes for the protein PD-1, which normally puts the brakes on a cell’s immune response: cancers take advantage of that function to proliferate."

And auto immune disease wasn´t bad enough? Is this going to be auto-immune on steroids?

"It is well known that CRISPR can result in gene edits at the wrong place in the genome, with potentially harmful effects."

But they don´t list anywhere what those could be.

"Because the technique targets T cells, which are involved in various kinds of immune responses, in a non-specific way, Chan worries that the approach might induce an excessive autoimmune response in which the cells would start attacking the gut, or adrenaline glands or other normal tissue. “All the T cells — everything will be active. That will be a concern,” says Chan."

What are they really trying to change in the genome under the guise of "saving lives"?

tsopfu

Actually, I´m worried that they could actually use this as a biological weapon and make it somehow communicable.

Oh noes science! Quick get your epipen!

Fucking retards here, unless you want to be killed by everything nature will be throwing at us (like the resistant bacteria) this research is very important.

Yes, there is a potential for evil doing, but that goes for nearly every scientific discovery, it's because humans are not perfect and biased and the scientific method is imperfect but selfcorrecting.

Don't blame those who do nothing but sacrifice their time and energy for the betterment of our species.

If you wanna talk malignant, let's talk religion.. Like banning the use of contraception in places infested with HIV/AIDS,despite there being proof that condoms help prevent the spread that's malignant.

Also I blame the church for your stupidity. You could have been an educated rational person but they clouded your mind with make belief, that's malignant.

I will continue to contend that the human body is the superior "advanced" technology and doesn´t need help from tinkering idiots in a lab.

As for your "resistant bacteria" and HIV/AIDS both are a result of man´s intervention. You have "science" to thank for both. *clap-clap*

I am not anti-science, but am anti ignorant homosapienses stating that 90% of the DNA is junk, just because their little narrow-minded homosapientic minds cannot fully grasp what is going on, and next they will be editing genes.

I am anti-ignorance, and earthian science had proved to be very much in the dark for ages !

It's a good thing. They have recently made advances in gene therapy that will allow them to treat diseases that were previously incurable.

Now, of course, it will be interesting to see if the results they got in the lab will work in humans. Hopefully so.

If this works, in the future, gene therapy could revolutionize the future of medicine. In the future, we could treat illnesses with gene therapy instead of toxic drugs. Chemotherapy is very toxic --- sometimes the chemo kills people.

Thanks for posting!

Like with everything this can be used for good and for bad.

The good: cure all genetic diseases and so prolong the life of a average human.

The bad: simply destroy a human being.

The first 2 sentences of your post really hit home with me. I had a horrifically bad reaction to a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, because it attacked the wrong cells in my body.

The drug infiltrates and kills the bacteria causing the infection by attacking its ability to replicate. The problem is that tendon cells and mitochondrial DNA are similar enough to bacteria cells for the antibiotic to attack them in the same way, which can leave a person seriously crippled and in a world of hurt for years.

We already have drugs that can infiltrate and rewrite human DNA with devastating results. It seems to me that this new technology would be like that on steroids. I cannot even begin to fathom how terrible the effects could be if something went wrong.

funny thing... just today i was watching "inside man" a morgan spurlock show, episode name is "futurist" on netflix and the guy interviewed some "bio hacker" group that had a way of screening dna for imperfections that could result in health issues later in life and edit it to make it "perfect", the guy said they could get the new dna into a person via virus that may endanger your immune system, but havent tested the thing as they havent found a way to make it safe.

he also said, once the techology is perfected it would be an arms race between wealthy families that forsure would try to create the fasted and smartest children...

we are living in a really really interesting time.

Rather than doing a genetic gene splice directly into the human genome which can lead to unintended medical and physical consequences for the patient...

A better approach is to use monoclonal antibodies that block the PD-1 cancer receptors directly on the cancer cell itself, the Chinese article did not mention PD-L1 receptors either only the PD-1, once you block the PD-1 and PDL-1 receptors of the cancer cell, the cancer cell will be unable to defend itself from the CD-8 killer T-Cells that the body will produce once the PD-1 and PD-L1 receptors are blocked. There is an American company already working on this and is also the first company to have the Zika vaccine in phase one clinical trials using what is called Sync-On technology that ultimately activates the CD-8 killer T-cells in your body to recognize various pathogens including cancer and many other diseases.

To continue the rest of the story...

The article said the best way to kill cancer is with antigens and that is correct...
.... what does that mean?

That means the immune system needs the target data that instructs the immune system to create an army of CD-8 killer T-Cells.... like an Army of Navy Seals and Special Ops soldiers that now have orders to go after the the bad guys
(cancer Viruses). The way to create the antigens is to use a DNA Marker that is made out of a material that is non toxic to the bodies immune system itself but yet contains a replica of the cancers DNA but without the PD-1 and PD-L1 receptors, so now we have two ways that can be used to activate the human body's own immune system to create an Army of CD-8 killer T-Cells to search and destroy cancer without killing the patient or screwing up the human geneome.
This is the best Technology out there that the news media is reluctant to talk about because it is being with held and DARPA is providing huge $$$ for the trials. No surgery, no kemo no radiation...

Cutting edge technology, and for many here, highly unethical.

But wait until your kid or mother can be cured of a terminal illness with this technology and you may well change your mind.

My friend is studying genetics at Cambridge and dismisses any ideas that any research could possibly be going on 'behind closed doors.' I'm far more cynical.

China will advance further, quicker, because they are less concerned with ethics than the West.

But, like anything, I'm willing to try it after all tests have been done.

Good find, Tess.

My friend just told me that she wants to see the results of the trial first...she says she thinks it is incredible if it actually works BUT crispr/cas has been proven to also have unspecific activity (no idea what that means but it sounds bad) so it could also be a bit dangerous.

I know a crazy Russian guy who applies a magnetic/electrical small charge to his and others' brains to research neuroscience. It's unethical and there are risks, but, as he says, scientific advances throughout history weren't tied down by ethics and thank God, otherwise we may still be using VHS videos.

Researchers should not modify the human Genome itself that god created... just unblind the human immune system so that it can recognize the cancers, viruses and bacteria that plague the humans and animals of planet earth. And that is what Sync-On tech can do...
