Best film-noir?
Can someone recommend an intriguing, but bleak, film-noir from the classic era?
I've seen Kiss Me Deadly, but that's about it.

AMERICAN EXCEPTIONALISM:

KICKING ASS, KILLING NAZIS, KILLING COMMIES, MAKING BABIES, BUILDING CITIES, EXPLORING SPACE, GOING TO THE MOON, AND PUTTING THE "CIVIL" IN CIVILIZATION SINCE 1776!

******************************

But I tell you this man, I tell you this, I carry an aura of "fuck you" everywhere I go and while I may not cause scenes I can sure as hell continue them and escalate them but good.

There is going to be a second revolution folks.

Count on it - and it will be the citizens against the government.

It will be damn bloody. It will be a war of attrition. It will result in over 100 million dead.

The heavy handedness of the government - the fascists in code enforcement and animal control especially - have brought this upon themselves.

Re: Best film-noir?
blue velvet.

Blue Velvet is a 1986 American neo-noir mystery film, written and directed by David Lynch. Blending psychological horror[3][4] with film noir, the film stars Kyle MacLachlan, Isabella Rossellini, Dennis Hopper and Laura Dern. The title is taken from Bobby Vinton's 1963 song of the same name.

Re: Best film-noir?
film noir is undefinable, you don't necessarily need a feme fatale or shady desolate street to make one, its basic theme is nihilism and i'd argue big lebowsky is a film noir and shawshank redemption, also call space Odyssey

The Maltese Falcon, another Peter Lorre film!

I don't think the Thin Man series would qualify for film noir, but they're sooo much fun!!!! Asta!

The epitome of that dark, foggy, shadowy, smoky, late night/overnight, crime drama. It surprised me and is likely in my top 5.

Check out Red Rock West. Very good as is Blood Simple. Touch of Evil gets my best of vote.
