What is the freaking deal with human longing?

It's chemicals in the brain like Dopamine dumbass.

A half azzed poem by me written a few years ago about human longing. I'll be 70 in a few months and it still holds true.


My thoughts rush outward,
And are parted. Deflected by my longings,
Like water, flowing round my sun-browned ankles,
Rushing back down the beach to the sea.
Foam crested waves, heavy with salt and promise,
Caressed me in the days of my youth,
Barefoot in the sand.

Hope burned as brightly then as sunlight,
Reflected in shards of brilliance off a wave’s crest.
And the nights came gently then, the sea breeze,
Brushing lightly, and with myriad hands,
At my salt encrusted skin.
I longed to know who my love would be,
Barefoot in the sand.

Then storms blew in to sweep the beaches clean.
They cleared the sand, scoured clean the footprints left by me,
Eroding away the carefully crafted sandcastles of my dreams.
The eternal sea… brutal, treacherous, uncaring. Teaching lessons in humility,
A painful thing for a hopeful boy. I’ve sometimes wept,
Barefoot in the sand.

I brush at my eyes and wonder, now,
At the bitterness left on my tongue by life’s tides.
How, naked and abraded, each receding wave,
Has dropped me bleeding on the beach.
But still I hope, when memory’s undimmed eye yet sees,
The hopes that filled the boy I was,
Barefoot in the sand.

It's a trick

There is so much energy in pain to be sucked off.

We are animals in intensive farming factories.

The only ones interested on us are the entities who suck off our life.

We are lured to make an extra mile and then we get another kick in the head.

Buddha said desire is source of all suffering.

Hungry Ghosts (Pretas) are pitable things. They are wasted creatures with huge, empty stomachs. Their necks are too thin to allow food to pass. So, they are constantly hungry.

Greed and jealousy lead to rebirth as a Hungry Ghost. The Hungry Ghost Realm often, but not always, is depicted between the Asura Realm and the Hell Realm. It is thought the karma of their lives was not quite bad enough for a rebirth in the Hell Realm but not good enough for the Asura Realm.

Psychologically, Hungry Ghosts are associated with addictions, compulsions and obsessions. People who have everything but always want more may be Hungry Ghosts.

Yes, we just get by day by day. Trying to get by as comfortable as we can.

This thread resonates a lot. Had a pretty mad night last night. A bad emotional breakdown. Thank you for making me feel less alone.

It is not desire or the object of desire that causes suffering- it is your ATTACHMENT to the object that is the problem- no attachment- patient acceptance = No problem.

Desire is the universe, desrielessness is liberation- desire is creation- find the middle way

I wonder what the opposite of longing would be? Contentment?

Have you ever achieved contentment before?

I am quite content with what I have...my brother has many multiples of what I have & it will never be enough for him.

More than anything else, I truely love/enjoy fishing! I'm always after a bigger fish than I had ever caught before.

But NOTHING gave me more satisfaction and gratification than to hook that elusive MONSTER tiger-muskie & hand the rod to my 10 year old nephew! :)

It took him about 25 minutes to land the thing.

You should have seen it! I held the fish up for a pic & it was almost as tall as my nephew...then we threw him back.

As of this day, I still have not caught a fish that big...and I don't regret it or a second!

What you are defining as "human longing" (or what TH White defines) is not "longing" at all, but rather self-pity....


Gonna live in this world on the basis of self-will? Then sorrow and disappointment will be your lot.

Choose to identify with the chaos and sickness others choose to live their lives by? IE, "popular" authors, film, and songs... Then you bind your life to the suffering others have induced and made profit from under guise of "art" or literature.


The idea of romantic love has been very corrupted. The more introverted and perverted one is, the more they are likely to attract the same. Self-willed persons don't sacrifice or seek to understand others, much less live comfortably with others.


Alienation from God causes despair, pain, and mental health aberrations.


The world is not aligned with God. Men have free-will and for the decades since WW-1 have been conditioned towards greater alienation in most art & literature. Sickness and perversion has been fostered and foisted upon Western Society as "the norm" and condition of living on the plane of fashion and normality to be strived for.


The so-called "mental-health sciences" attract sick minds who seek their own understanding, but alienated from God themselves, they perpetrate sickness and perversion as norms by endorsing acceptance and diversity. In a world with no values or love for others, there can be no love for self; much less Love For God or others.


The human condition driven by self-will and fear is caused by alienation from God. Men choose to deny God and seek satisfactions defined by others. They are surprised and feel betrayed when they don't find what they expect.


It is self that betrays us and brings misery on so many levels.

If you would live in happiness and with confidence, turn to God!

Could "longing" be the same as "coveting"?

There are 2 (out of 10) commandments that warn us against that.

Look at all the SJWs longing/coveting of their neighbors goods...and all the misery it brings them.

I choose to deny there is the possibility of the knowledge of god from those who are alive in this reality. I would describe myself as a very content and maybe even 'happy' person.

When others try to explain the events of this world by claiming direct influence from either the devil or god, I get pissed at such brainwashing. That would suggest that I am an agent of evil, no?

How do you explain my lack of misery?

The Longing - Afterglow

"Desire" is one of the (many) energies created by the friction that is inherent in the machinery of our embodied mind and personality. Different people express different frictions. Right now, astrologically speaking, Jupiter is 90deg square to Pluto, so This question about desire is right on point. IT's a paradox of humanity and it causes things to be felt and actions to be taken.

I think that the root cause is not even desire, but attachments that lead to the insatiable and never fulfilled yearnings and disappointments.

Dude, somewhere there is a box with your name on it filled with stuff you and I talked about privately that you needed. At this rate you should get it sometime when you're about forty lol. Dunno how many times you moved but package tracking lost sight of it. Could be it was opened at the homeless shelter and contents dispersed after you left.

True, "Attachment" is the Root Cause".

True we would be zombies and putty for the calculative minds to feast and fatten on.
Placid will is dead of hope.
It becomes inanimate objected minded and in so surrenders it soul to the material matters that own its way of being and life.

It is a liability unto its self and others rights of individual judgment and life ownership of their own life.
We become lowered to the form of the beasts of the field, that are beasts of burden unto the fields they work in and for.
It sounds very communist to the strictest forms and enslavement of men's hearts, souls and minds, by voiding them out for their loss of control of their own being or control of its way.

Like bridle, muzzle and chains just lick rocks and think no more until your die and then you may know what none living knows, but only imagine is there for all.

your "longings" for things is a personal problem, not based in reality, because you can achieve any thing your mind can conceive ... if you give it enough energy - all things are possible
