I personally know several people who escaped from Cuba when Castro took over. He was a ruthless dictator, and the people had no rights under his reign.

The fact that he WAS a Dictator only makes his tenure all the more remarkable. Dictators are usually lucky to survive only a few years in power... let alone five decades. And -like it or not- there were still millions of Cubans who worshipped that man until the day he died. Remember: NO dictator rules entirely by fear.

I'm certainly NOT condoning anything he did during his reign, but at the same time we are at the mercy of how he was portrayed by the American press during those 50 years. Look how radically the perspective of JFK changed once the full scope of his adulterous ways and rampant drug use were revealed long after his death.... yet, he is still adored and hailed as a great leader when in fact he was very, very flawed.

I suspect there is a great deal about Castro's administration -both pro & con- than any of us will ever fully realize.
