I live in New Jersey. This morning on the way to work I saw 8 bald eagles! | |

nutmeg User ID: 70579162 United States 12/05/2016 07:46 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Nope - it was the actual huge, majestic bird that is a symbol of Liberty in this country! It's REAL! That's even better :) Eagles and Hawks are amazing animals. You always remember when you encounter them. I'm from New Jersey also. I never see Eagles, but we have so many Cooper Hawks where I live. I love to watch them gliding through the air. |

Hi neighbor Do you notice how much more wildlife there is in general than there was in the 80s and even 90s? (I'm not sure if you are old enough to remember those years, but I am.) SugarSand (OP) User ID: 9296373 United States 11/24/2020 11:41 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'm bumping my old thread because I just saw another one adn I think the nest is nearby (in the woods across the road ... the woods are at least 2 miles deep). And it got me thinking. Stinkbugs, jumping spiders, kissing bugs, salamanders, fence lizards ... there are all kinds of critters around that we did not know about when I was a kid. They all hatch from eggs. DDT ban and subsequent rebound? I thought that the new bugs were due to the warming trend, and/or immigration and trade bringing some new things up from the South. Could the all these new (to NJ) bugs (never saw a jumping spider or spricket before ... they are everywhere ... kissing bugs WTF? ) .... Could they be coming back like the bald eagles, rather than moving up? When the shit hits the fan and the end is just nigh, will you cry out to Heaven? Will you lie down and die? They are opportunistic scavengers. Rats with wings. Rule the sky with an iron fist, picking on anything smaller than them. Pretty fitting.... I wont deny that my role here is to deny.... |

Quoting: TheDenier They are opportunistic scavengers. Rats with wings. Rule the sky with an iron fist, picking on anything smaller than them. Pretty fitting.... In 1980 there was a single nest and it took them several years in a helicopter to find it. They are certainly scavengers, my boyfriend regularly sees them at the dump. But it means we're not poisoned anymore. When I was a kid 40 years ago, there were NO reptiles except the occasional turtle. No oddball bugs like I'm seeing everywhere. We had some hawks and some rodents ... but nothing like this. When I was a kid, a snake would be an oddity. Worthy of a picture, capture. Now I let them be. There are so many. Frogs. I think it means it's finally clean here. When the shit hits the fan and the end is just nigh, will you cry out to Heaven? Will you lie down and die? SugarSand (OP) User ID: 9296373 United States 11/24/2020 12:31 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Fabulous! I have been feeding birds for 20 years. Due to the impact our infrastructure has on the birds’ domain, there is a scarcity of seeds and bugs. Bird seed is about $3-5 a pound. So, if you have the time, money and inclination, please feed the birds. This includes pigeons. Many birds are also threatened due to foot injuries, fishing line and the consequences of a tourniquet around the lower extremity. I carry 20 lbs of birdseed in my car, where I have it handy. Quoting: Original Bunnyswanson I only have hummingbird feeders at my house, but we have so many birds ... lots of farms ... we have herds of turkeys that just chill all over the neighborhood This year I had 5 hummingbirds that I could identify ... the eagles are something special, though. I don't think I can get tired of them. Even at the dump. I remember being in school and fretting that we'd never get them to come back. Anonymous Coward User ID: 79240261 United States 11/24/2020 12:43 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This was in Pittsgrove, Salem County, less than 5 miles from Vineland, Cumberland County. Quoting: SugarSand I saw one swoop down across the road from left to right about 20 yards in front of me and when I looked right at where it landed there were 4 adults and 4 juveniles with dark heads! It looked like they were scavenging a dead deer! On Friday I saw one land in a high tree on Rt. 40. On Thanksgiving day the kids and I saw one in a field, tearing up a rabbit. Evidently, they aren't very bothered by cars. In September, I saw 5 or 6 fishing in a marsh from a nest on a perch in Fortescue, Cumberland County (That's a known, established location along the road - not a surprise). When I was a kid there was a single nesting pair in the whole state (Cumberland County) and when I was in college we'd use binoculars from various points and search and search to see one of the 3 or 4 nests that were in Salem County. There are at least 191 nesting pairs in the state at last count (I think that's a very low estimate, considering there's no nest on the map within miles of my location) ... but really - talk about a comeback! What's remarkable is how they are just flying around neighborhoods, acting like turkey buzzards. Dirty Jersey my ass!!! It was overwhelming seeing that - emotional. they have plenty to eat and they are thriving and raising young successfully. I'm so grateful ... I live in a place where the eagles soar - New Jersey! I really can't believe it, lol. I see and hear them too - I'm on the shore - Garden State is a great state - George Washington passed through many times during the Revolution - Great state other than our 'Dick' Governer. |

What it was eating haunts me but in the moment that I was eye to eye with the scary raptor my mind could only take in the bird. Quoting: Shookith 77222658 They love people. They are very curious about human things. I am extremely happy to have them around. He's not a scary raptor he only eats dead things. An outdoor mirror will attract them ... like turkeys they love their own reflections. When the shit hits the fan and the end is just nigh, will you cry out to Heaven? Will you lie down and die? They empty my bird feeder every night and eat my plants. Cute animals, but very annoying! My bird feeder was 1/2 full last night (large bird feeder). It's empty this morning. I'm buying expensive bird food to feed deer? They must come and tilt it then eat off the ground. I have to figure out a way to get the feeder up higher, up on a tree branch, but the only solution would be to have a pully device so I could lower it to fill it! I have no idea how to do that! Any ideas? Last Edited by nutmeg on 11/24/2020 01:21 PM |

Surprised I missed it. In the months before I left NJ, a bald eagle must have had a nest near my house. I'd see it fly across a park behind my place almost every day. The last time I ever saw it, it had a big snake in its talons. I used to see them in New Castle County, DE, too. |
