Works = deeds, but could it also mean their 'art'?
These creatures have been underground for almost two thousand years...it is now that they are surfacing. They thought they were safe, that they had corrupted the whole world into accepting their evil crap...but they were wrong.
The end of the book isn't about the suffering of decent God loving people. The end of the book is about the suffering of the wicked.
This is why many of us, who have found God, are at peace. The evil are gnashing their teeth right now.
