REVEALED: Millennials lack basic survival skills compared to older generations YOUNG people are clueless when it comes to basic survival skills
[link to www.express.co.uk]

A survey shows millennials are missing out on practical skills such as map reading or fishing, compared to their grandparentsí generation.

More than half of young adults were unable to tie a single knot and 40 per cent had never swum in open water, despite Britain being an island nation.

The poll, conducted ahead of the London Boat Show, found simple life skills have been left behind with advances in technology.

Researchers also found that most people under the age of 44 prefer to use Google Maps and Sat Navs to get around, but half of over-55s stick to a paper street map.

Just a third of the 2,000 surveyed know how to spark a flame by natural means, with less than a third having caught their own fish or seafood.

But on the upside they have the best basic dying skills out of any generation in the history of the world.

NO one will ever outdo them in how they will die in fucking DROVES...and 50% of those deaths will be due to not having a puppy or set of crayons handy.

They spent their childhoods either at school, or glued to a TV; what do you expect?

Even though I played hard outside as a kid/teern, I'm now 30 years old; my dad is a mechanic and he never showed me a thing about cars. I had to teach myself to change the brake pads.

He did instill a lot of negativity in me however, coming home and drinking before often going into mentally abusive rampages.

I believe I hate working more than most people because of him as well. When I was young he would often ask me if I wanted to go to work for him today; I would say no but I never told him why. It was because of how tired/angry he would be when he got off; why would I want that?

Anyways... berating such a generation isn't helping anyone; not that those who do so give a fuck really. Perhaps if previous generations weren't such utter sell-outs we might be better off.

Well you're pointing out the obvious OP... But its a needless skill in this age. You dont need to be able to start a friction fire, its generally a big waste of time..
The chances of you needing to make stone tools, bow hunt, or friction fires are LOW so not a good choice to pursue, unless you like it as a hobby.

I just inherited a tackle box from my grandpa.

Some of the lures look ridiculous.

One is a tiny rubber crawdad with a hook in it.

I won't throw it away because I might need it someday. Maybe fish are actually that dumb, lol.

You think that's not how your Dad learned? That's the problem, 'expecting' others to show you how to do every little thing.

Quit blaming your upbringing. If my mother did that, she'd have ended up like every one of her siblings...drunk, on welfare and in an abusive relationship and abusing us. Unless you're blaming the children for their inadequacies involving how they were raised; then its all good to blame them?

I stated facts in how I was raised, not trying to play a blame game anyways.

Besides; I worked for 4 years in a factory. One hundred degree building in the summer wearing arm guards, pants, steel toes, gloves, safety glasses and ear plugs. Lifting forty pound units nine hours a day sixty three hours a week.

Any other job that I do now is a BREEZE but I still hate it; I could be working at home on my garden/orchard and building my own house from wood I chop myself. I could be sharing fresh vegetables and fruits with my neighbors.

Instead; I gotta work just to pay rent and land taxes. Just so that kids can get a sub-par 'education' and just so that a large portion of the population can just leech off the system.

I could smell the BS in my mid-teens.

It's not; in the old days it was common for father and son to build hot-rods. If they didn't build those; then back in the day their fathers would be ashamed if their kid couldn't do such a simple thing at the age of twenty.

Jeesh, all this talk of blame. I believe it's an acceptable thing anyways; as long as you're willing to forgive the faults of others and move past it. Nothing wrong with blaming in that case.

A whole bunch of that generation are hopelessly unprepared.

As a man you can go one of two ways and succeed. You can make a lot of money and pay other people to put your car batteries on, change flats, build sheds, mow the yard, reinstall your operating system, etc.

Or you can do most of that stuff yourself and save a bunch of money.

If you can't manage one of the two above ways then you are pretty much fucked.

Survival skills are always relevant. Being oblivious to your surroundings is no excuse nor does it make it any less true.

Bad parenting exasperates the problem. People aren't learning skills because they don't have anyone to teach them or don't even know they exist. Young people have got to wake up enough to seek it on their own.

Re: REVEALED: Millennials lack basic survival skills compared to older generations YOUNG people are clueless when it comes to basic survival skills
...

You think that's not how your Dad learned? That's the problem, 'expecting' others to show you how to do every little thing.

Quit blaming your upbringing. If my mother did that, she'd have ended up like every one of her siblings...drunk, on welfare and in an abusive relationship and abusing us. It's called strength of character and not using what you were dealt as an excuse to hold you back but as a catapult to move you forward. That's the difference between those who succeed in life and those who don't.

But its okay to 'expect' kids to know survival skills when its not relevant to them at all in the society they were raised in?

Either teach them or be quiet.

How are they not relevant? That's part of this generation's problem right there.

What is meant when I say that: It's mostly not relevant; kids aren't going to teach themselves to survive unless its necessary.

That's the parents job anyways. Argue all you want but all(or *most*?) mammals learn from their parents.

At best you'll maybe have a few here and there learning it as a side hobby with the way things are now.
