They spent their childhoods either at school, or glued to a TV; what do you expect?

Even though I played hard outside as a kid/teern, I'm now 30 years old; my dad is a mechanic and he never showed me a thing about cars. I had to teach myself to change the brake pads.

He did instill a lot of negativity in me however, coming home and drinking before often going into mentally abusive rampages.

I believe I hate working more than most people because of him as well. When I was young he would often ask me if I wanted to go to work for him today; I would say no but I never told him why. It was because of how tired/angry he would be when he got off; why would I want that?

Anyways... berating such a generation isn't helping anyone; not that those who do so give a fuck really. Perhaps if previous generations weren't such utter sell-outs we might be better off.

You think that's not how your Dad learned? That's the problem, 'expecting' others to show you how to do every little thing.

Quit blaming your upbringing. If my mother did that, she'd have ended up like every one of her siblings...drunk, on welfare and in an abusive relationship and abusing us. It's called strength of character and not using what you were dealt as an excuse to hold you back but as a catapult to move you forward. That's the difference between those who succeed in life and those who don't.

But its okay to 'expect' kids to know survival skills when its not relevant to them at all in the society they were raised in?

Either teach them or be quiet.

How are they not relevant? That's part of this generation's problem right there.

Stop being lazy and teach yourself. You know, use a little something called initiative.

What is meant when I say that: It's mostly not relevant; kids aren't going to teach themselves to survive unless its necessary.

That's the parents job anyways. Argue all you want but all(or *most*?) mammals learn from their parents.

At best you'll maybe have a few here and there learning it as a side hobby with the way things are now.
