You wouldnt put solar panels on the side of the wall so the height is not needed. You need the width of the top only and length.

Mounting solar electric panels vertically facing south with sand/dirt to reflect some sun up to panels actually works pretty well. Not perfect efficiency but not bad. Perhaps the wall would come close to paying for itself over then 30 year lifespan of the panels. Would keep alot of pollution out of the air we breath.

Height of about 20' was for security function. But why not cover the wall structure with solar collectors to get a financial return while helping our environment.

Build the wall with the solar panels and do several large solar parks in the SW US. Now is the time to go green for America. We could generate solar dollars for the economy.

The solar panel idea is good, but the Mexican's and drug Cartels would steal the panels; since they are facing south. To protect the panels, you'd need a security device. I'd opt for laser turrets spaced at 1000 feet apart and run on solar/battery system...

It would make for an excellent deterrent...

Use them to electrify the wall

And build an electric bullet train on this side from CA thru Texas - and power with the panels too

WIN WIN WIN!

Germany is a little teeny country with a climate like Oregon. The SW US could supply all the power for America's electricity within 4 years and be a decentralized grid system and George Noory would quit crying!

... grew up on a dairy farm ...

... there was a brand of fencer called a "weed burner" that was needed to keep weeds under control in the pasture fences as they would reach the fence and short out the fencer ... this brand of fencer would burn the weeds ...

... those things had quite the wallop!!!! ...
.
... certainly could use a similar product for "human weeds" which are any one who comes into this country ILLEGALLY! ...

If the panels are facing South, then they will be on the Mexican side.

What about putting the high speed train on the top of the wall?

Step up to high voltage for distant usage, no problem. Use most or all electric near production. Sell some electric to Mexico :)

If insulated posts are used as standoffs for a 2000 mile wire.the voltage would be enormous just from wind and static electricity.not enough to power lights but enough to burn weeds.

I actually thought about this solar wall thing myself.

Take shipping cargo containers and stack them three deep and fill them with sand and gravel. leave some of the upper ones empty as guard checkpoints and run a row of panels on top or a high speed rail track for a train. Equip motion sensors all along the top too. lay a few layers of crushed cars under them as a foundation and to discourage digging. Maybe have crushed glass shards all along on the top.

Or maybe go high tech on a section and make a desalination station near the ocean? Say... maybe a twenty mile stretch?
