Yes, you do mis-remember, quite badly. It's no different than people claiming they "remember" Venus' brightness so well that they can definitively and qualitatively say from memory that it's brighter now than ever before in history.

Contrails have existed since the dawn of aviation, and they do persist if weather conditions permit. A simple and unbiased search of historical photos turns up a treasure trove of examples from long ago.

Civil aviation has grown enormously since the 60s...higher altitudes, bigger engines.
