There's a silver lining in every cloud and I suppose if the dam fails the california state legislature would go and silicon valley too.

Always gotta look on the bright side.

Very few people understand this. The impact would be devastating, another blow to food production. Multiple insurance companies would be wiped out.

My mother lives in an area that would see the initial wave at 10 hours of breech. The number of people evacuating would be unreal. I followed this thread closely the last time. She had bags packed and things already in the car prior. I called her immediately when the evacuation was called because I knew it from GLP. I was watching that guy live when it breached. She was gone in less than 20 minutes. Her drive south to family is normally 4 1/2 hours, it took her just over 5 hours.

She knew people that didn’t leave as fast. It took them over 5 hours just to get to Sacramento, a drive that would have taken 45 minutes. This was just an evacuation of only a few towns. I can’t imagine if the entire thing goes.

They have received so much moisture and wind. In the last few years tornados have been touching down in that area. She couldn’t work her yard until very late due to how moist it had been.

Re: California's Lake Oroville Main Spillway Severly Damaged/Eroded. Oroville Dam's Recently Reconstructed Main Spillway Fundamentally Flawed
Something to consider, we just got 0.3 inch of rain in Woodland CA the past hour. One of my gutters drains about 500 square feet of roof. The gutter was raging and created a mini flood in the yard BUT it all drained into the soil rather soon after the rain subsided. So my point is there is substantial capacity for the soil to absorb water.

Of course this is the flat valley floor, so may not apply in steep hills.

Based on the radar, heavy rain is moving into the Watershed as we speak.

Thanks!

Whatever happens, I am going to ride it out.

DWR holding out for 899'? That is complete insanity.

I'll play along, and raise them for 900.

AH ... but in it's infinite wisdom DWR now says they won't open the Main Spillway Gates UNTIL the lake hits 899'!!

When the lake is hitting 899' EVERYBODY in Oroville should be on the road getting to higher ground (imo)!!
 Quoting: Midwest Skeptic

100% agree... except for now they are saying not until 900 feet...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77563121

Kinda suggests that the MS is now a de facto ES. Interesting times we live in.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 32975363

EARLIER TODAY DWR SAID THAT THEY DON'T PLAN ON USING THE MAIN SPILLWAY THIS YEAR!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 13358554

If they can't open the gates I suppose the water just starts flowing over the emergency spillway?

Is that their plan? It may be the only option they have. Especially if they think the main spillway concrete may fail even if they are able to open some of the gates.

I mean, Oroville is getting pretty full quickly!

CAN ANY ONE OF YOU REFUTE THESE NUMBERS?

Emergency spillway overtops at 901. If gates closed & inflows high, emerg could get to 908 or more. Dam itself would not overtop till 922.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 13358554

Whole things goes if its at 905. That means you have 4 ft over a 100 yds moving over the emerg. That would disimate the whole foundation

In essence over topping the ES weir is FAILURE MODE # 1.

At that point the dam is IN THE PROCESS of failing.

It's just a matter of time after that.

I grew up in Sacramento and had family in Oroville so I know that drive well, and all the agriculture in between. There are not a lot of escape options if you have to evacuate due to flood.

Gridley, Live Oak and Biggs... do they even have an escape route? They're surrounded by water ways. And I learned only recently the Buttes are NOT an escape to higher ground because it's all private property and behind locked gates.

A failure of the dam is a dire event with devastating consequences most people here don't comprehend.

Re: California's Lake Oroville Main Spillway Severly Damaged/Eroded. Oroville Dam's Recently Reconstructed Main Spillway Fundamentally Flawed
Please note

The MS is the ES because it takes years for that much concrete to cure to full strength.

If they allow water on the spill way there is a high chance of failure.

I dont think they expected the damn to refill 2 years later. Normally you have 10 years after building before it under full load.

Too much concrete too fast, it cant be used until 900 because high risk of failure if they did too soon.

Hence its not in operation. Its not smart to have that much water in it beforw the snow pack melts.

Obviously they cant use the spill way till it cures proper otherwise they risk the whole dam and the new spill way.

ES would probably be an even worse scenario at this point as it would under mine the spill way faster.

They have no other choice but to hope and pray they dont have to use it, otherwise they probably know its high likely hood of loss.

Say the MS can handle 50,000 CFS.

Water can come in as much as 200,000 CFS.

The ES can handle 150,000 CFS for how long?

The DWR would prefer you call it the main spillway and the Auxiliary spillway.
They say calling it an emergency spillway gives the impression that there is an actual emergency.

Does anyone know where the information is to verify what she said about the lake staying at 900 for a month in 2011? I've only found info back to 2016

And it sounds like a lot more Oroville people were aware and making noise than we knew.

Interesting video from DWR. At 2 minutes in she states that they need a buffer 50 feet of storage for any rain or snowmelt. 3 years later they need less than a foot???

Makes sense, right?
