California's Lake Oroville Main Spillway Severely Damaged/Eroded. Oroville Dam's Recently Reconstructed Main Spillway Fundamentally Flawed
The Spillway, not the Damn has suffered major Damage due to unexpected erosion. The flows have currently been halted. That is all the info I have read so far. Old article.

Re: California's Lake Oroville Main Spillway Severely Damaged/Eroded. Oroville Dam's Recently Reconstructed Main Spillway Fundamentally Flawed
NOT GOOD!!

Water is going to back up QUICKLY ... and could lead to some major dam issues if they can't start releasing again:

from link:

"...The operators of Lake Oroville dam planned to increase the release of water at the dam to 70,000 cubic feet per second to make room in the lake for runoff from the current storm.

The peak release began around noon Tuesday. That’s when witnesses said they began to see chunks of concrete coming off the spillway..."

To put that into perspective the NORMAL release that the Hoover Dam does into the Grand Canyon is 12,500 cubic feet per second!!

From Wikipedia:

"...Known as the second-largest reservoir in California, Lake Oroville is treated as a keystone facility within the California State Water Project by storing water, providing flood control, recreation..."

"...Oroville Dam is an earthen dam and is the tallest dam located in the United States, measuring over 770 feet (235 m) high and 6,920 feet (2109 m) across. The dam was the largest earth-fill dam in the world until succeeded by Aswan High Dam in Egypt. It was built by the California Department of Water Resources as part of the California State Water Project. The dam houses the Edward Hyatt Powerplant, an underground hydro-electric plant that was completed in 1967.[8] Six generators are used to provide a maximum generating capacity of 819 MW.///"

"...Storing over 3,500,000 acre feet (4.3 km3), it is the second-largest reservoir in California, after Shasta Lake..."

According to the latest news water is currently flowing into the lake at the rate of 130,000 cubic feet PER SECOND ... which works out to about 11,000+- acre feet per hour or currently 264,000+- acre feet PER DAY flowing into the lake.

I have not been able to locate how much water they can send through the electricity turbines, but with the large capacity, 819 MW, it is NOT insignificant.

As noted above the entire capacity of the lake is 3,500,000 acre feet, and after all the recent rains it is already WAY UP from it's low level from a couple of years ago (during one 3 day period in January it rose 45 feet!! even with the electric turbines running)

If they can't get the spillway back operating they could have some serious problems creep in rather quickly with this TALLEST DAM IN THE US!!!

I'm about 15 miles downstream from the dam. CA DWR has been trying to maintain the elevation at around 850 feet (crest elevation is 900') for flood storage.

Even with the previous 50K CFS releases, the lake rose almost 10 feet in the past 24 hours. With the spillway shut down, it will rise even faster. Currently at 858 feet. 42 feet to go.

I'm having flashbacks to 1997, when they thought the dam was going to be overtopped by excessive inflow. It wasn't a fun time.

Lake Oroville Dam water flow (daily) statistics along with lake level
(FULL is at 900' asl - at 850.85 yesterday)

[link to cdec.water.ca.gov]

On Feb 6, yesterday, the dam had 2,819,768 acre feet of water impounded, or about 700,000 acre feet below FULL capacity. (per news reports it was 82% full yesterday)

From the chart it appears that the Hydro part of the dam can process between 11,000 CFS to 20,000 CFS (sorry I can't be more precise at the moment). Remember, currently 130,000CFS is flowing into the lake with more to come from the recent rains.

We will know more tomorrow when we see how the flows were today and what the lake level is, keeping in mind the OUTFLOWS were basically shut down except for the Hydro outflow for 1/2 of today.

Good news article with a GREAT PICTURE of the problem with the spillway. Looks serious. Hopefully they can stablize it enough to get water flowing through it again.

According to the official flood maps, we would be OK in the case of a total failure...by about 1 1/2 miles. I'm not sure I trust that estimate. We'd only need to head east about 3 miles to substantially higher ground, but right now, that road is underwater from last night's rain.

Bother.

Then look at how much of the spillway has been ripped away!

This is DAM (NO pun intended) SERIOUS SHIT!!

Updated info on how much water they can spill via the Hydro Power Plant ... I was WAY off above.

The Hydro Power Plant can ONLY spill out 5000 cfs of water(cubic feet per second) even as inflows into the lake are running about 130,000 cubic feet per second

I know there are 'river valves' in the base of the dam, but don't know if they are separate from the power plant flow.

I know one of these valves was damaged several years ago and read recently it still has not been repaired.

Yes. A spillway has gates to rapidly release water from a dam. They are able to be used only when the water level is nearing the top of the dam in most cases.
