Man, they really blew it with that evacuation last time. If there is a call for an evacuation this time, I wonder how many will comply.

I didn't evac last time and I won't in the future unless I see a Tsunami coming down the road.

oroville dam dream 2019 02
My view was from above the boat ramp area, I was looking down at a fast turbulate river rapids and falls.
I heard, look closer.
I narrowed my view to the rapids, I could see that it was formed from the key wall and other rubble of oro dam.
I heard, This is what the dam will look like after it fails.
My attention was then toward Oroville and the large valley. I saw mud and twisted destruction as far as I could see.
A sense of forlorn remoteness and abandonment.

At one of the Oroville dam meetings last year they said if it fails there would be a 60 mph 100 foot wall of water at Oroville 30 foot wall of water at Sacramento. There is only one exit for the water from that big valley, it all has to go through San Francisco. If the water exit is blocked by flood debree it may never be cleared out forming a big toxic lake.

On that latest blancolirio vid the bridge road over the spillway channelwas still intact with the water half up its bank. How did/will they clear all that debris? That was 19 Feb I think.

Has the road bridge been cleared? Surely by now? If it has been cleared surely they can not have dredged the channel clear with all that water flopping over the road debris.

Will all that loose gravel/sand etc cause the gates/ or help scour the channel creating problems?

Did they leave clearing the spillway channel TOO LATE? Hmmmmm
 Quoting: mon KeyHanger

I'm not sure I understand. Local news said the contractor was removing equipment and debris from the spillway (below the gates) in case it is to be used.

Did you see debris elsewhere?
 Quoting: Crunch62

no the road bridge over the spillway channel....back of the gates
 Quoting: mon KeyHanger

I looked at the video. The road behind the gates is something that was built for construction access. I certainly hope they have removed it. It is completely blocking the spillway intake channel

My point is they had not cleared it by feb 19 and the lake water already half way up it...so how easy is it to clear when inundated. Probably even more water than that shown in vid.

I've also been to San Francisco for business. I really, really, really hate that place.

I hope something horrible happens to it.

I just feel they will do everything possible to not use the spillway. Why leave clearing that access road bridge so late...letting more than 30 feet of water lay against that road bridge? (going by juan's date and level numbers). AND it would be higher than that by time they got round to clear it!

CAP'N DO YOU SUPPOSE IT WILL BLOW OUT AT THE GREEN ACRE ON THE FACE OF THAT DAMNED DAM?

OR DO YOU SUPPOSE THE GATES WILL FAIL?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77223081

I think the green spot will blow out someday, but the current issue is the spillway gates.

They rebuilt the whole spillway, but the gates are still fucked up. The bottom of the intake to the gates is at 813', but they won't try to use it until 830-840'.

What happens if the gates jam or tweak when they try to open them?

The repair work done so far is temporary. It is supposed to be torn out and replaced with new permanent spillways and fix the gates after this wet season. If you look close you can see that the roller compacted material is not holding up very well.

This is an exceptionally great investigative article about the gates. If you only read one thing on this thread, read this.

If you have any extra time, read the one on the green spot, below. And by the way did you know that supposedly there are no functioning piezometers on the entire dam? They can't check water pressure and flow.

[link to www.catholic.org (secure)]

The new spillway is beautiful. But read these articles and ask yourself if that means the risk of a dam failure is mitigated.

Why are they still only letting out only 6700 cfs. Thats like one turbine. Juan makes no mention of this and nothing but silence on the local media. Juan talks about opening the spillway though.
