I know some have also mentioned concerns about Shasta Dam and Trinity Dam. Imagine if Oroville, Shasta, and Trinity were to break at the same time. Say good bye To Oroville, Sacramento, Redding, and everything in between, and probably everything between Sacramento and the Bay Area, as well as quite aways south of Sacramento.
Notice how the biggest fires during the part fire season were near these three dams. Coincidence? I think not.

I see them turning on lights. looks like cam only started working about 10 mins ago. are they going to open gates?

the other cam is down but this one at the spillway top is currently online, being moved a ton. seen lights turn on and vehicles with yellow lights moving around

“As the lake surpasses elevation 813 feet (the elevation of the spillway gates), it’s anticipated that some water will seep through the gates onto the spillway as the gates are not designed to be water tight.

The flood operations plan calls for a target elevation of 835.5 feet through the end of February and as low as 848 feet by the end of March. DWR will allow the lake to continue rising past 848 feet through the late spring and summer months to build up water supply storage and offer recreational opportunities........”

They say the gate leaking is normal but, failed to mention the gate structure is cracked and several inches out of alainment.
Also some of the hydrulic gate seals have broken and rigged up patches done on them.
Gate jamming has also occured in the past.
The gates were not fixed over the past two years, they are scheduled to be repaired or replace in the future.

IF the gate are going to leak much they will want to QUICKLY raise the water level above that where scouring of the intake channel could occur - ie: let it rise quickly once the water level hits 813 and then level it off once the water level gets near 835ish.

Better to have a higher lake than to have GUARANTEED scouring of the intake channel.

The real issue will be the UPCOMING moisture events. Will they be able to safely expel the excess water coming into the lake on a 1:1 basis with the problems that they have had and are having?

*Below average spring moisture event ... they are fine
*Average spring moisture event ... probably OK, but some "if's"
*Above average spring moisture event ... time to leave town for 6 weeks or so until the rain/snow/moisture stops coming and the watershed is drained

A breach of Trinity dam wouldn't affect the Sacramento valley, rather the Trinity and Klamath rivers. Water is siphoned off and pumped into the Sac river from Trinity dam.

Also, Shasta is going to start releasing 40,000 CFS at 11am today, PST.

Something may fail in the levee system with that much water!

This cam shows the lake side of the dam. It was tuned off when the water started going in fast. To scary for the little people I guess.

FEMA only repays portion of Oroville Dam spillway costs

OROVILLE, Cailf. — The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced Thursday it would pay $205 million for Oroville Dam spillway repairs, leaving $306 million in costs they said were not eligible for reimbursement.

This is in addition to $128.4 million FEMA previously approved for reimbursement for emergency response, debris removal, and other costs.

“We appreciate the hard work and commitment of FEMA staff, however are disappointed in some of their initial interpretations regarding cost eligibility,” said Joel Ledesma, DWR Deputy Director of the State Water Project about the decision. . .
