California's Lake Oroville Main Spillway Severely Damaged/Eroded. Oroville Dam's Recently Reconstructed Main Spillway Fundamentally Flawed

I used to drive by the dam a lot when I was working, going from the valley to the coast, and this is as full as I have ever seen it. Blow up the pics and look at the shoreline, there is No waterline. I have never seen it without some waterline showing.

I didn't know anything about the San Luis dam so I looked it up.

This is a very big dam, at the base of where the mountains (think San Andreas fault mountains) meet the Central Valley, one of the biggest farm valleys on the planet. The valley floor is completely flat, nothing to stop the water if that dam should fail, or spill over. Crop damage alone could be catastrophic.

I was looking at volumes of Dams above Oroville. They are close to full also.

From one of the links above the DWR stated that they wanted Oroville at a MINIMUM of 848 by the end of March, and would take it higher if possible so as to store water for the water users and the recreational users. They did NOT say how much higher than 848 they would like to take it, but that was their MINIMUM for the end of March.

Lake Oroville is currently at 831.94 and the NET inflow (after accounting for water being released) is down to about 7,000 cf/s. LOTS of storage capacity still exists in Lake Oroville. Unless unusually heavy spring rains happen it is likely the dam/spillway will NOT be overstressed this year. (though both are NOT in great shape)

Greed makes taking chances worth it for them. Remember the last troubles they sent all their gov people to save the fish. While the dam could be seen on cam overflowing the gov was in Oroville telling the people everything was ok. The people were only helped by the local sheriff who made the call.

Up to 65f today probable with some clear sunshine.

Will the snow melt be starting?

Then some rain Tuesday followed by days of ever higher temps.
