The heavy seep from yesterday seems to have dried up? Lake level is now 833.9 feet, 20 ft up the gates; so the seep is there… right? Lots of activity on R side of spillway this early morning. #OrovilleDam

Interesting. They sandbagged across the whole spillway. Heavier seep in middle. Maybe they also sandbagged on R & L further back, out of sight? Why? Hard hats still conferring on top of gates. #OrovilleDam

Millions of Californians' water bills could climb after Trump's FEMA won't pay $300 million for Oroville Dam

Millions of Californians could end up with higher water bills after the Trump administration on Friday announced that federal emergency officials aren't going to reimburse the state for $306 million in repairs to Oroville Dam stemming from the 2017 spillway crisis.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency said federal taxpayers shouldn't have to pay for problems that existed prior to a massive hole forming in the dam's concrete spillway in February 2017, eventually prompting the two-day evacuation of 188,000 downstream residents and a $1.1 billion emergency response and repair job.

Oroville Dam -- the nation's tallest -- is operated by a state agency, but it was built and maintained using funds from agricultural and urban water agencies that store water at Lake Oroville, such as the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.Metropolitan supplies water to more than 19 million people, whose water bills could rise if the federal government decides not to pay. In total, Oroville Dam water for 27 million Californians. . .

GOOD ... BUT ... WHY should the rest of the country PAY ANYTHING for the California DWR's mismanagement of the Oroville Dam and Lake?

Californians should absorb the ENTIRE cost of the fiasco, not force taxpayers in Iowa, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Alabama etc. pay for incompetent management by a California State Agency!!

wow, site worth checking.

Releases from Hyatt PP stopped.

In between new spillway slabs are gutters that can lead to cavitation.

Seeps going on now.

Sounds ominous, but what do I know.

A great book to understand cavitation is The Emerald Mile, the part about Glen Canyon lake Powell dam. A fabulous read. The spring of 1983 when it came close to disaster. Anybody interested in this thread would enjoy reading that book.

How often does the spill way seep?

Is this spillway going to fail? is the hill sliding after putting all the weight of the new spillway on it ?

Well...lot of statements NOW saying the gates supposed to seep??????

As far as I remember, this was not the case previously.

There was no mention of gate seeping being normal in the reporting of the near failure of Oroville dam that I recall.

Please correct me if I have a faulty memory.

Because of lack of maintenance the gate seals were allowed to degrade and pack with mud and debris. Some to the point of seal components being broken. Less than proper repair was made on some seals. The motors that move the gates short out at any jams or stuck gates. They were not designed to be water tight but, neither were they designed to leak as bad as is being seen now.

Some of the problems are talked about here.

This is the single most important article for every Californian downstream to read, and every American who eats fruits, vegetables, or nuts. Central valley is the greatest growing region in the world for them.

The risk of the gates failing cannot be over exaggerated.
 Quoting: Prayandprepare000

about the gates.....you need to read this.

About the spillway....it is anchored into the bedrock. Any problems will be from joints on the surface that produce cavitation, which is like water hammers of immense pressure from air bubbles that come from rough spots, and start to break up cement below. Look up cavitation. A bump of concrete the size of a walnut can lead to holes as big as a building.

Re: California's Lake Oroville Main Spillway Severely Damaged/Eroded. Oroville Dam's Recently Reconstructed Main Spillway Fundamentally Flawed
Per a DNR press release (link several pages back) they want the lake at a MINIMUM of 848 at the end of March.

They also say they will take it HIGHER if they can so as to store more water. How high they would let it go they did not say.

The real problem is heavy heavy rains in March going into April in conjunction with the lower elevation snow melt. That is what happened a couple of years ago.

If the season rains end with no final heavy multi day /multi week push they should be OK.

IF those heavy late season rains DO come then there can also be problems with the dams up in Montanna/S. Dakota on the Missouri River tributaries. One of those in particular is on the HIGH RISK list (as is Oroville and the Glen Canyon Dam on the Colorado)

The fact that they are not even doing a test of the spillway right now... this sets off alarm bells.
Oroville is at 836 feet and they were supposed to open spillway at 835 feet.

Can the spillway even be opened?

Possibly the spill way is not ready for use; and they are trying to fix the spillway and reinforce the side walls.
