By the way the brown water was when the initial release first hit the bottom. There was a leftover road down there that they had to remove earlier but dirt was left. The brown quickly was washed away. I don't think it is relevant.

Any indication of actual damage to the dam or spillway? I hope the repair works and holds. Prayers that it will be ok.

Update from DWR for GLPers monitoring the situation...


The California Department of Water Resources has activated the Emergency Action Plan for Oroville Dam High Flow Operations. This is a precautionary measure only. No hazard or threat to the Oroville Facilities exists.
Due to forecasted storms, DWR plans to increase releases from the Oroville main spillway and releases into the Feather River later this week.
Current releases to the Feather River are approximately 20,000 CFS with current releases from the Oroville main spillway at 10,800 CFS.
DWR plans to increase total releases to the Feather River to up to 30,000 CFS starting Friday, April 5 at 10 a.m.. Main spillway releases are anticipated to be up to 21,500 CFS starting Friday, April 5 at 10 a.m.
Forecasts can change quickly and may affect projected operations.
DWR will continue to notify local emergency management agencies and entities along the Feather River of significant changes in releases from Lake Oroville.

Just heard on kfbk radio (local). The new spillway has 7 feet minimum concrete up to 100 feet thick in areas where the bedrock was eroded...


Not sure if true but something to consider.

I like the oroville show reference. preprogramming ? like all the 9/11 referece in tv, movie and even cartoons

not going to matter how thick the concrete is if water gets under it. just more weight to fall

If Oroville goes ... well it just takes out a SMALL slice of California, and NO Nuke plants.

If Ft Peck goes ... well it takes out everything the entire length of the Missouri River, including multiple Interstate Highways, Cities, and SEVERAL Nuke Plants ... AND THEN starts working on St. Louis and the Mississippi River, with it's dams, bridges, and I think MORE Nuke Plants.

Back during the Great Missouri River floods of 2011(?), which were triggered by HUGE rain and snow melt events out in Wyoming, Montana, and western Canada, Ft. Peck was in serious trouble. Nothing that they have done since has remedied it's basic problem as a dam.

The loss of Oroville would be a pimple on an elephant compared to the loss of Ft. Peck.

San Joaquin valley is as big as some state's..and Oroville isn't the only dam that could fail..San Luis and Don Pedro have their own issues and they rest above millions of folks.
