They only used concrete on the top, all the build up and all the emergency spill area is rolled fly ash paste. Rolled fly ash has a history of not being stable or able to stand strong water flow, a history of failures. The fly ash work was meant to be replaced over the next several years.

Also, looks like there is a green spot on both sides of the dam, maybe all the way across now?

That green spot doesn't really seem to be indicative of leaking during the winter. It rained lots, so everything is green. Wait till the summer and if there's a green spot, you know there's water feeding that grass.

the biggest issue i can see is that they haven't given
this this thing enough time to Cure, before running

UPDATE: As of 10 AM this morning, flows down the main spillway have increased to 14,800 cubic feet per second (cfs). Total releases to the Feather River will remain at approximately 25,000 cfs through Sunday.

Exactly. 30 days per inch of concrete.

Any additive to accelerate curing weakens the concrete.

So it's either still wet or cured but at expense of strength of concrete.

This is true. I used to be a concrete contractor.

If this shit show continues its regularly scheduled programming, we'll witness an epic collapse of this dam.

Unfortunately, the Central Valley which is the richest agricultural region on the planet will be ruined forever.

All of you are correct,been in the trades for 35 years. Concrete is a fickle bitch! Depends how far they had to haul it also,can't let concrete heat up,lot of variables. But as much canned fruit as you can afford.

There's an earthquake fault running right through Lake Oroville from south to north. It's called the Miner's Ranch fault. It was discovered long after the dam was built by Beale Air Force pilots. If you dont have anything else to do, here's the study from 2010 by South Feather River Water and Power. Oroville gets their drinking water from Miner's Ranch Reservoir aka Saddle Dam. The fault is capable of a 6.5 earthquake.

They knew about the faults where they wanted to pile up all that mine dump waste to get rid of it instead of reclaiming it. The papers of the day detail how the officials hid the earthquake data. A little research still brings it up.

Oro Dam Blvd. East will remain open. We'll continue to monitor the spillway performance and adjust operations in response to updated forecasts.

Tomorrow around 10 AM flows from the Oroville main spillway will increase to 25,000 cubic feet per second (cfs). Releases to the Feather River will remain consistent at 25,000 cfs

To put 25,000 cfs into perspective ... the normal flow that is sent through the Grand Canyon out of the Hoover Dam is around 17,500 cfs.

The Niagara River carries 200,000 cfs, but MOST of that water is diverted into it's hydro complex and does not go over Niagara Falls itself.

They built a concrete plant right on the hillside and made the concrete on site.

Also it was over 100 degrees for most of the summer when they were working on the spillways, don't know if that makes any difference.

But Oroville Dam is very remote, they had to build a concrete plant and make the concrete right there, it wasn't trucked in.

Will it be able to handle 25,000 cfs today?
