Oroville Dam's Recently Reconstructed Main Spillway Fundamentally Flawed It looks to me like DWR has shut spillway gates 1, 2, 7 & 8. Probably a work-in-progress to shut spillway down entirely. WTF? Inflows from snowmelt are up to 35,000 CFS, a 50% spike in last 24 hrs. If something is wrong with the spillway DWR needs to DISCLOSE IT NOW. #OrovilleDam [link to mobile.twitter.com (secure)] |

Quoting: UH 71124740 no, they have monitor it all because they are orchestrating the release of water from a whole bunch of damn in the Region, and they have to do it in such a coordinated way so they don't flood the valley. |

Oroville Dam's Recently Reconstructed Main Spillway Fundamentally Flawed Is this some kind of pump to the side of the spillway? If so, not good. This is a new twitter account, and the guy just posted it without explanation. I'm assuming he captured it from the Dam Cam. [link to twitter.com (secure)] |

That lake is FULL. 4 million acre feet, any failure would be catastrophic downstream in Sacramento. Need to monitor this situation for sure. |

Oroville Dam's Recently Reconstructed Main Spillway Fundamentally Flawed Posted: Apr. 11, 2019 11:51 AM BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. - The Department of Water Resources has stopped releases from the Oroville Dam Spillway due to forecasted dry weather. The department began reducing the releases on Monday, April 8. On Wednesday, April 10, flows down the main spillway were reduced to zero at 1 p.m. Releases from the newly reconstructed main spillway began at 8,300 cubic feet per second on April 2 and peaked on Sunday, April 7, at 25,000 cubic feet per second. . . Oroville Dam's Recently Reconstructed Main Spillway Fundamentally Flawed Oroville has only received 2/10 of an inch of rain in the watershed in the last week ... so all the water coming into the lake is snow melt. Snow melt rates are very predictable and with no rain now in the short term forecast I am sure the dam operators feel comfortable letting the lake level rise a bit so there is more storage for the summer months. After years of drought California is necessarily concerned about a LACK of water in storage, particularly since it's population is now MUCH higher than it was at the time the last major water storage dams, including Oroville, were built. Build a very populous urban society in a desert ... and voila water becomes an issue. Wait until a 20 or 50 year drought hits the west, as has happened per the geological records, during the last few hundred years. WHEN, not if, that happens much of California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, and even Colorado will be in deep doo doo. There will NOT be enough water then to even minimally support the large populations that reside there now, let along provide water for business and industry so as to keep the local economies going. Beautiful areas ... but basically a desert environment that is very dependent upon seasonal precipitation, precipitation that does not always occurs - per geological records. |
